Are Trendy Hair Products Worth It?

Are Trendy Hair Products Worth It?

By: Claire Watkiss

With the rise of social media and various influencers, different hair care products and methods of taking care of your hair have come to the surface. Influencers and TikTok have taken to sharing their extensive hair care routines and their holy grail products.

Olaplex, Inc. was founded in 2014 in California but has recently gained traction on social media leading people of all ages to try it out and fall in love with it. Their patented technology includes the ingredient Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate which has allowed professionals to experience a whole new level of color and care for all hair colors and types. Olaplex keeps its product line relatively straightforward, offering customers shampoo, conditioner, bonding oil, shampoo for blondes, and their leave-in hair treatment that has gotten all the buzz over TikTok. The term “Olaplex bun” has been coined by people of all ages who use the N0. 3 Hair Perfector or the N0. 6 Bond Smoother to secure their hair in a low bun to wear throughout the day. While the price tag is a bit steep, the bottles last for months on end and are a worthy investment if you are wanting to improve your hair care routine.

With Olaplex being at the forefront of many trending hair care products, there are a few other notable products that have been scattered throughout my feed. Gisou’s Honey Infused Hair Oil has gained traction for not only it’s adorable packaging but for its moisturizing properties from honey acting as the main ingredient. Some say it provides incredible shine while others claim it is too thick on their hair. Personally, I will not be trying out this product as I do not regularly use hair oil, however, it may be worth a shot if your budget allows it.

R+Co is a widely used brand in salons around the world. There are several shampoo and conditioners, along with various treatment and styling products. Their website does allow you to shop by hair type, which may help narrow down your options.

Over the past couple of years, customized hair care has played a large part in the beauty industry. Brands like Function of Beauty and Prose offer customers completely customized hair care products tailored to their needs. After taking a short quiz, these brands set up a hair care custom routine while keeping in mind sustainability and clean ingredients. These companies have always interested me, and I think one day would be a good investment.

Specialty products have also been popping up on my feeds, like those from Glaze Hair. Glaze makes something called the “Super Color Conditioning Gloss” which is essentially a tinted moisturizer for your hair that enriches its color and gives it shine and softness.

Now enough with the products. Let's touch on the several styling tools people have been raving about on social media. In doing so, we must touch on the Dyson Airwrap. At $600 you can achieve the best blowout of your life from home (or so we’ve been told).

While not everyone can get their hands on one, others have shown how you can achieve the same look by using tools like the Revlon Hair Dryer Brush, Velcro Rollers, and even Hot Rollers. Influencer Brigette Pheloung has shown her TikTok followers and Youtube subscribers how to get the perfect blowout look by just using velcro rollers you can find at CVS for $10.

Whatever trend you choose to follow, follow one that works for you. Read reviews online before purchasing and remember that all hair types are different.
