Cream vs Powder: Which Makeup Formula is Best?
Cream vs Powder: Which Makeup Formula is Best?
By: Liv Briley
There are seemingly endless makeup options available in the marketplace, each advertising themselves as the best way to achieve the perfect finish. Powder formulas are more traditional for most makeup products, but the recent rise in liquid and cream-based makeup raises questions about which formulation is best. Whether the current style is a matte finish, a dewy glow, or somewhere in between, it is useful to understand the differences between cream and powder makeup and when it is best to use each type.
Powdered foundation, blush, bronzer, and eyeshadow are still the most prominent formulations in the market, but perhaps not for long. Powders typically come in either a loose or pressed formula, with loose powders having less ingredients and being less sensitizing to the skin. Pressed powders offer better coverage than loose powders, but both tend to look more natural. Powdered makeup is lighter, so it blends into the skin better, making it a good option for beginners.
Powders have a matte finish, absorbing oil on the skin and controlling unwanted shine. While being a lighter option, powders also tend to make fine lines and wrinkles more noticeable as they settle into the skin.
Cream makeup options are more full-coverage, but do not blend as easily into the skin. This makes cream products slightly more advanced to use than powder options. A little goes a long way with cream products, so they tend to have a longer lifespan. You can apply most cream makeup with your fingers, so there is no need for fancy brushes or beauty blenders if you do not want to make extra purchases. Leaving the skin dewy, cream makeups are good for those with dry skin or anyone hoping to achieve a glossy look.
On the other hand, cream makeup can make the skin look cakey and easily settle into your pores, making them a less attractive option for anyone with acne-prone skin.
When it comes to layering products, creams must always come before powders. This means if you use a powder foundation, all of your other products must also be powders. When only using powder makeup, using a moisturizer or primer before beginning your makeup can ensure it lasts throughout the day.
If your goal is long-lasting makeup, layering powders on top of your cream products is the best option. This goes for all products – foundation, blush, contour, and eye makeup. You can easily set each element of your makeup routine with a powder version if you are planning on wearing your makeup throughout the entire day.
Cream and powder makeup options each have pros and cons, so it is important to consider what you want to get out of your makeup before purchasing. No matter how many products and routines we are bombarded with online, the best makeup routine is the one that makes you feel your best.
