Cruelty-Free Beauty Roundup

Cruelty-Free Beauty Roundup

By: Bella Duncan

The concept of sustainable shopping has been buzzing around the fashion community over the past few years. Though there has been much commotion over the practice of intentional consumerism, one major component of sustainability has not received as much attention: cruelty-free products. Much like sustainable and organic items, cruelty-free regulations lie at the feet of independent organizations in the United States as opposed to government agencies.

Unfortunately for consumers, this creates discrepancies and confusion about what products are truly cruelty-free. The following brands and products are certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny, one of the leading cruelty-free certifying organizations.

Haircare

Drybar, made famous for its iconic blowout salons, boasts a plethora of products to achieve the perfect bouncy blowout, such as the Liquid Glass Miracle Smoothing Sealant.

Eva NYC is the affordable sister company to Amika and is known for its Mane Magic Collection which strengthens and softens hair.

Ouai offers a wide range of hair care products, including a pet-safe shampoo.

Skincare

Osea has proudly been clean since its start in 1996, the ocean being its biggest inspiration.

Glow Recipe has become well-known on social media for its high-quality products, such as the Watermelon Glow Drops.

Supergoop will keep your skin protected in the sun with its wide variety of SPFs, available in tinted, shimmery, and mineral formulas.

The Ordinary focuses on simplicity, offering a range of single-ingredient serums alongside many other reasonably priced products.

Summer FridaysLip Butter Balm was the sought-after lip product of the season,  celebrated for its clean, vegan ingredients.

Sunday Riley, Harper Bazaar’s anti-aging award recipient, is the perfect skincare brand for any age, offering virtual consultations and a variety of treatments.

Makeup

Try out the Power Grip Primer from E.l.f. if you are looking for a product that is affordable and widely accessible.

Covergirl is a tried and true drugstore brand, known for their campaigns featuring famous women and their “easy, breezy, beautiful” tagline.

For a brand who has it all, check out Glossier. Their products range from playful eyeshadows to perfectly matched foundations.

Ilia specializes in clean, conscious makeup with the added boost of SPF in many products.

Kosas offers a wide range of products including makeup, skincare, beauty tools, and bodycare.

Created by Who What Wear Founder Katherine Power, Merit is a completely vegan makeup line.

Stila, best known for their glitter eyeshadows, has been a makeup artist favorite since the 1990s.

Since there is no uniform standard for identifying cruelty-free products, many companies will try to mislead their consumers with labels reading “cruelty-free” or picturing a bunny. Below is the only official Leaping Bunny logo. Any product sporting this bunny has been vetted through a multitude of tests by the organization.

As you shop, keep these brands and ideals in mind. Switching to or incorporating more cruelty-free products in your regular beauty lineup is a simple and effective way to consume intentionally.
