How to Have Glowing Skin All Year Round
How to Have Glowing Skin All Year Round
By: Emma Greene
As the seasons change, maintaining smooth, healthy skin is more difficult than usual. As temperatures rise and cloudy days make way for the sun, here are five beauty tips to implement to ease the stress of unpredictable weather and make your skin glow twelve months of the year.
Wear your sunscreen.
You have heard it time and time again, but wearing sunscreen is the best way to prevent premature aging. Even if you do not burn easily, the addition of SPF into your morning routine helps to minimize fine lines and discoloration, allowing you to age with grace.
Daily SPF comes in a variety of products, from moisturizers to skin tints to foundations and powders. We recommend Supergoop!’s Glowscreen and (Re)setting Powder for touch ups throughout the day.
Add a retinol to your regimen.
Retinol is one of the most versatile products on the market. Used to clear acne, improve the appearance of fine lines, and reduce the visibility of pores, its regenerative properties increase the turnover rate of skin cells, providing benefits to almost any skin type. Note that this quickened turnover results in more sensitive skin, making SPF a must.
The Ordinary’s Retinol 1% in Squalane is a gentle and easily accessible option.
If you would like to intensify the results of your retinol solution, consider seeing your dermatologist to discuss stronger options. When adding a new chemical product such as retinol to your regimen, it is important to ease yourself into it. This can be done by skin cycling.
Try skin cycling.
If you are looking to get into skincare, skin cycling is the perfect routine for beginners. Among the most common is a four-day cycle including one night each for exfoliation and retinol followed by two nights of recovery. As for exfoliants, The Ordinary’s AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution is a popular choice, as is their Retinol 1% in Squalane. Of course, these products can be adjusted according to one’s specific skin type and needs. The two “active” nights are followed by rest nights, during which only moisturizer and regenerative products are applied.
Skin cycling is effective because it gives the skin time to recover and adjust between product applications. This allows products to achieve their purpose without overwhelming the skin. Leaving a day between each application type also grants users the time to identify which products may not work for them. If your skin seems to agree with your regimen, you may increase effectiveness by adding additional steps or wearing retinol two to three times per cycle.
Dermaplane for ultra-smooth skin.
Flawless application of foundation and cream products requires a smooth canvas. Dermaplaning minimizes skin texture by removing dry skin and hair, and may be the key to achieving an airbrushed makeup look before your next event.
Dermaplaning is easiest on bare, dry skin. After cleansing, pull a section of your skin taught. While holding the blade at a 45-degree angle, shave using short strokes in the direction of hair growth. Because dermaplane blades should be replaced each three to four uses, Tweezerman’s Facial Razor is our favorite. It includes a reusable handle and three refill blades for minimal waste and maximum cleanliness.
Give your skin some time off.
If you struggle with clogged pores, acne, or generally inflamed skin, taking days off from makeup could be the solution you did not know you needed. Not only does minimizing your routine save time, but it allows the skin to breathe and heal rather than masking irritation with layers of product. Although it may feel strange at first, try limiting your daily face makeup to sunscreen, blush, and concealer only when absolutely necessary. This will minimize texture and irritation, making the application of a full-face look that much easier when the time comes.
Implementing new products or practices into your skincare routine requires patience and trial and error. Trust that you know your skin best, and while tips from others may help, everyone’s routine and face is different. By taking the time to find what steps and items work best for you, you will surely find what makes your skin its happiest and healthiest.
