The Ritual of Self-Tanning

The Ritual of Self-Tanning

By Sophie Amen — April 7, 2025

For those who want to appear as if they just returned from a beach vacation—even in the bleak winter months when natural sun exposure is limited—fake tanning has become a weekly ritual to achieve bronzed, sun-kissed skin. People tend to look for products that give even results, are fast-developing, don’t transfer, and are good for sensitive skin.

Many people have turned to self-tanners as an alternative to traditional sunbathing or tanning beds, as they are safer and more convenient. Self-tanning offers a way to achieve bronzed, radiant skin without the risks of extensive sun exposure or harmful UV radiation, but what exactly makes a great self-tanner?

The active ingredient in most self-tanners is dihydroxyacetone, a sugar that reacts with amino acids in the skin which produces a temporary “stain,” causing a browning on the skin. The color usually develops within a few hours and can last up to several days before gradually fading as the skin naturally sheds dead skin cells. The reaction is non-toxic and skin-safe, which is why many people prefer it over tanning beds; self-tanning only involves the outermost layer of the skin.

There are several reasons why self-tanning has become a popular beauty trend. Self-tanners are available in a variety of formats, including lotions, mousses, sprays, and drops, allowing users to achieve a glowy look at home without having to visit a salon. Many self-tanners offer instant results, only requiring a few hours to set.

Moreover, self-tanners are customizable and controllable. Users can control the depth of their tan by adjusting the amount applied. Whether you’re looking for a subtle tan or a deep bronze, its versatility allows people to decide.

To get the best results from self-tanning products, consider the following tips:

  1. Exfoliate before applying to remove dead skin cells and prevent patchiness.

  2. Use a mitt or brush for application to prevent streaks and uneven patches.

  3. Avoid showering and exposure to water for at least 6-8 hours to allow the tan to fully develop.

  4. Apply in sections and don’t forget to blend at your wrists, ankles, and joints.

  5. Avoid applying excessive amounts of moisturizer before applying the tan; certain types of moisturizers, especially those that are oil-based, can cause the tan to turn out patchy or strip away color in some areas.

And above all, choose the best tan for you! Self-tanning is a great way to achieve a radiant look without the risks of sun damage. It’s no wonder why self-tanners have become a go-to beauty solution for many, with benefits such as convenience and versatility. By following proper application techniques and the tips above, anyone and everyone can enjoy a flawless fake tan year-round.
