The Brown Clothing Trend

The Brown Clothing Trend

By: Claire Watkiss

Brown is back and better than ever. From deep chocolates to buttery suedes and just about everything in between, we have been seeing these shades rocking runways, filling up our feeds, and overflowing clothing racks in our favorite stores. This color has been seen as “dull” and “drabby” in comparison to its neutral peers, however this year it has taken on a new life. Minimalism has taken over after almost two years of chaos in our world and we are gravitating towards the familiar, the practical, the comfortable, and the easy. Brown seems to provide that sense of comfort and familiarity with the earthiness it suggests. To stay on-trend without breaking the bank and being wasteful, select these three staples to include in your wardrobe this fall and winter.

1. Oversized Brown Leather Blazer

We are all familiar with a black blazer. We reach for it when we are interviewing for a job or even when we want to elevate a basic outfit. However, have you ever thought about adding a brown blazer to your closet? This classic silhouette in a cocoa shade can be worn the same way you wear your black blazer but can refresh your look in a simple way for the fall. A white tee, ripped jeans, and your favorite black combat boots with this blazer make it a foolproof look for running errands or doing your favorite fall activities. Make it “girlier” by pairing the boots and blazer with your favorite black slip dress and you are ready for dirty chais with the girls.

2. Brown Long Sleeve Bodysuit

Bodysuits have been a closet essential for quite some time now. While you probably have a few variations of white and black, long and short sleeve bodysuits, this fall is calling for you to opt for one in brown. A long sleeve style would be the best choice to layer with for the cooler weather ahead. Additionally, a high neck style would not only keep you warmer but would effortlessly layer with any tee shirt or tank top you already have in your closet. Throw over a leather jacket, or perhaps the brown blazer I mentioned previously, and you have yourself a comfortable and chic fit.

3. Brown Booties

Chances are you already have a pair of brown booties in your closet. Whatever shade of brown  they are, I am here to tell you that they will work and that you should wear them. A black boot is a basic, and this fall and winter a brown boot is a must-have as well. I personally own the  pair of suede boots from Free People pictured below, and I wear them with just about everything. My favorite way to wear them is with a pair of simple jeans and an oversized turtleneck sweater. Before it gets too cold outside I also love to pair them with a little black dress and  a jacket thrown over. They also look great with a pair of leather pants, or for that matter, leather shorts or skirt. They are extremely versatile and carry well into the spring months as well.

Whatever you decide to take from this article, just know this; brown is back and is not going anywhere. Invest in a piece or two for your closet and you will not regret it. Brown is the new neutral and will be a great addition to your wardrobe in any capacity.
