When it comes to London Fashion Week, no house has the ability to illustrate British culture quite like Burberry. Held in London’s lush Victoria Park and accompanied by instrumentals and narrations from late British star Amy Winehouse, the fall 2024 ready-to-wear collection honored the brand’s humble beginnings while innovating Burberry outerwear as we know it.
Creative Director Daniel Lee spoke to Vogue regarding his inspiration for the collection, explaining, “The vibe this season really started with thinking about the characters that wear Burberry. Everyone from royalty to the street—Burberry I think can touch everyone.” Lee’s efforts to focus less on transforming the brand’s character and more on embracing its defining characteristics resulted in a collection worthy of the titles “fall” and “ready-to-wear.”
A color palette of muted yellows, bright reds, and dark browns created a moody atmosphere reminiscent of a dark autumn night. However, olive and army greens – possibly referencing Burberry’s history of outfitting the British army during WWI – dominated the runway from beginning to end. A variety of pieces from women’s plunging neckline sweaters to men’s check-patterned trench coats contained complementary shades of green.
Originally designed for protection from harsh British winters, it should come as no surprise that the iconic Burberry trench coat was the star of the fall/winter collection. Some of the most unique coats from this season were lined with luxurious fur and yarn-like tassels, adding dimension and texture to the clean silhouette trench coats are known for.
Professionally polished boots and heeled loafers were the hidden gems of the show. Adorned with buckles and fringe, the shoes skillfully balanced out the heavy layers of the looks and reinvented the classic black boot commonly seen in fall collections.
Burberry’s collection proves why the brand is considered a quintessentially British brand by those all over the world. Daniel Lee’s ability to stay true to the brand’s roots while delivering fresh ideas every season continues to leave audiences wondering what Burberry will do next.
