Copy Magazine: The World’s First AI Fashion Magazine
Copy Magazine: The World’s First AI Fashion Magazine
By Campbell Bensley — September 22, 2025
In an ever-expanding world of artificial intelligence, a Swedish magazine looks to reimagine what it means to be a fashion publication. Copy Magazine, described as “the world’s first AI-powered fashion magazine,” made headlines with the release of its debut issue. Led by creative director Carl-Axel Wahlström, the publication aims to challenge outdated stereotypes and eliminate human bias through the use of AI algorithms.
Flipping through the pages of Copy Magazine, it's hard to believe you aren't looking at the work of real humans. Its spreads are filled with glossy images of models styled in bold, eye-catching looks, and editorial writing that mimics that of traditional fashion magazines. However, with this publication, there's much more than meets the eye, as each page has been carefully generated using artificial intelligence. Wahlström views this as a means not only to showcase the technical capabilities of AI but also to break free from societal notions of beauty, gender, and representation.
Through the use of algorithms, Copy Magazine believes it can remove human bias and create a more inclusive vision of fashion. Though some concerns have been raised about whether AI can truly reimagine fashion at all.
Wahlström acknowledged the challenges encountered when attempting to create unbiased images using AI.
“AI equates fashion with a generic idea of glamour. That is the default mode, because it has been trained on the mass image bulk, and this is its conclusion of what fashion is,” Wahlström told Vogue.
Supporters view Copy Magazine as a natural evolution in the fashion world. After all, fashion has always thrived on reinvention. It’s an industry built on experimentation and boundary pushing. With AI already embedded in so many aspects of our daily lives, some believe it's only right for the future of fashion to also embrace this technology. The idea of working hand-in-hand with AI to create images that were previously impossible is appealing to many, especially when it is viewed as a way for smaller publications to level the playing field and expand creative possibilities.
Yet, not everyone is convinced.
Critics argue that Copy Magazine takes away the very thing that makes fashion special. It replaces the art of human creativity with sleek lines of code and an AI trained to generate what it believes fashion should be. Does fashion begin to lose its originality when algorithms are predicting next season’s trends? Some might believe so. Others worry that the magazine’s use of artificial intelligence sets a harmful precedent for the industry. One where magazines may choose to rely on AI rather than paying models, writers, photographers, and stylists whose work keeps the industry alive.
Whether you view this project as a bold step forward or a dystopian sign of things to come, it’s clear that this is the beginning of a much larger conversation on how technology and artistry coexist in the future of fashion. Ultimately, Copy Magazine forces us to reevaluate what authenticity truly means and reconsider the importance of human creativity in an AI-driven future.
