On August 25th, 2026, Dolly Parton, singer and philanthropist, passed away at age 80.
Dolly Parton was an impossible figure to define with a singular title. She was a singer, songwriter, actress, author and philanthropist; but above all, she was a fashion icon whose image was as recognizable as her music.
For nearly seven decades, Parton built a career far beyond country music and transformed personal style into a powerful form of self-expression.
Few American entertainers have left behind a legacy as enduring and recognizable as Dolly Parton.
Dolly Parton grew up in rural Tennessee, born on January 19, 1946. Parton’s Appalachian roots influenced her songwriting, values and the way she connected with audiences.
Her rural upbringing also shaped the contrast at the center of her image: a woman grounded in traditional values who presented herself through unapologetic glamour.
Parton was known for her iconic blonde wigs, dazzling outfits, bold makeup, and rhinestone-covered costumes. Her style was bold and impossible to miss but it was never accidental.
Parton never pretended that her appearance was effortless. In interviews, she often joked about her image and frequently made fun of herself.
“It costs a lot of money to look this cheap!” Parton famously joked.
In her 2023 book, Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones, Parton documents the stories behind her fashion throughout her career.
“I just wanted to be different. I wanted to be seen.” Parton said.
The little girl who once wore a coat made of scraps eventually became the woman known for rhinestone-covered gowns.
Parton’s music made her famous, her films expanded her audience and her businesses turned her name into a legacy. Her philanthropy gave that legacy a purpose and her unmistakable style tied her career together.
Dolly Parton spent her career making sure people knew exactly who they were looking at, and there was never any mistaking her.
