Fashionkind: Influencing Meets Sustainability

Fashionkind: Influencing Meets Sustainability

By: Bella Duncan

At the crossroads of influencer work and sustainable fashion lies Fashionkind, an online boutique of sustainable pieces curated from impactful designers. What began as an educational Instagram blog by Nina Farran in 2014 has blossomed into a shoppable storefront housing the best of today’s conscious, luxury designs.

While at the University of Pennsylvania, Farran formed a campus extension of a humanitarian fashion brand that helped to build schools in Africa. This experience led her to “change the world using fashion as the vehicle.”  Farran aimed to draw light to intentional consumption with the Fashionkind Instagram. As the blog gained traction, readers began to ask where they could find said sustainable products, leading to the launch of the Fashionkind site.

Alongside Farran is co-founder Sophia Bush, who is an actress, activist, and influencer. Life imitates art as the former One Tree Hill star leads the path toward responsible consumption. Bush influenced an entire generation of fashion-forward young individuals with her famed character Brooke Davis’ innovative “Clothes Before Bros” clothing line in the hit teen television series.

Fashionkind operates under the “Kind Code,” their process for vetting the best ethical designers and brands. The categories of the evaluation process include fashion and impact. Fashion focuses on the integrity of the pieces and designs, while impact focuses on the integrity of those behind the pieces and designs. In addition to sustainability, Fashionkind places great emphasis on social responsibility and empowers consumers to buy with this interest in mind.

The idea that remains at the heart of Fashionkind is simple: style does not need to be sacrificed to achieve sustainability.
