From Stage to Sidewalk: Stevie Nicks’ Timeless Style Influence

From Stage to Sidewalk: Stevie Nicks’ Timeless Style Influence

By Audrey Cooper — November 10, 2025

The season of the witch has arrived, and who better to summon its spirit than the bohemian queen herself, Stevie Nicks. For decades, Nicks has reigned as both a rock icon and a style muse. Rising to fame in the mid-1970s as the bewitching lead singer of Fleetwood Mac, Nicks helped define an era with her ethereal stage presence. Her free-spirited, gypsy aesthetic of flowing skirts, velvet capes, and crystal pendants has transcended time, combining rock, femininity, and a touch of magic into one unforgettable silhouette.

Nicks doesn’t just perform when on the stage; she transcends it. Her rhythmic, alluring energy spills beyond the stage and into the crowd, every movement feeling deliberate and holding the audience spellbound. Her wardrobe tells a tale just as powerful as her music, glimmering with the same emotional poetry as her lyrics. She’s devoted to her collection of beaded shawls that catch the light as she spins, and her signature platform boots. Nicks turns fashion into art.

In an interview with BAZAAR, Nicks said, “I didn’t want to look like anyone else- like Janis Joplin or Grace Slick. That’s why I never went to any of the big designers. I drew a stick figure of what I dreamed up and gave it to my costume designer, Margi Kent…it was a handkerchief dress with a jacket, long droopy chiffon sleeves, and velvet platform boots. I didn’t want to wear high heels.”

The now-77-year-old rock star's looks have inspired designers for decades, such as Saint Laurent, Coach, and Rodarte. Nicks’ look is defined by draped fabrics and rich textures, think ruffled hems that twirl when spinning, handkerchief skirts layered over lace, and rock staples like bell bottoms and corset tops.

Nicks is a lover of vintage pieces, especially regarding her collection of hats that she decorates with feathers, flowers, and ribbons. Her hats help cultivate the look that is undeniably Stevie, framing her face and adding to the drama of her theatrical aesthetic.. Just as iconic as her hats are the scarves and roses that drape her microphone stand as she performs, adding an essence of romance and visual motion.

Decades into her career, Stevie Nicks remains a source of inspiration for a new generation of music artists and fashion designers. Contemporary stars such as Harry Styles and Taylor Swift have publicly credited her as an influence and inspiration; Styles even referred to her as his “magical gypsy grandmother.” Beyond music, Nicks has changed fashion by bringing chiffon, velvet, flowing skirts, crystal pendants, and wide-brimmed hats into the rock world. Her style choices not only have become easily recognizable but also have shaped how generations present themselves in their day-to-day lives.
