Jonathan Anderson Steps Down as Creative Director of Loewe
By Sophie Amen — April 21, 2025
After just over a decade of transformative ambition, Jonathan Anderson has stepped down from his role as creative director of Loewe. Under his direction, Loewe experienced exponential growth and curated an abstract aesthetic that catapulted the brand to worldwide prominence.
Appointed in 2013, Anderson revitalized Loewe by blending its rich heritage of craftsmanship with contemporary designs, elevating the brand by offering a modern interpretation of masculinity and femininity. Loewe’s original legacy of leather craftsmanship was reimagined through modern aesthetics, silhouettes, and designs that earned attention from critics and consumers. Anderson’s combination of past and present honored the brand’s legacy and made for commercial success.
After attending the London College of Fashion, Anderson was quickly catapulted into the fashion world. He worked as a visual merchandiser for Prada under Manuela Pavesi before launching his label JW Anderson, which quickly received recognition for its innovative approach to menswear.
By 2010, Anderson received sponsorship from the British Fashion Council's NewGen committee, facilitating his debut catwalk presentation at London Fashion Week. The success of his brand led to many notable collaborations, including Converse, Uniqlo, Topshop, and more.
In the early 2010s, Anderson’s work caught the attention of LVMH, leading to his appointment as creative director of Loewe. He introduced iconic styles such as the infamous “Puzzle” bag. His ingenious designs appeared on every medium, from film screens to red carpets.
Taylor Russell’s look at the 2024 Met Gala, Rihanna’s Super Bowl LVII halftime performance in custom Loewe, and Beyoncé’s Loewe look for the Renaissance World Tour are only a few of the many examples of Anderson’s influence.
Anderson’s designs were also featured in hit films Challengers and Queer, as he played a large part in the films’ costume departments. His collections featured imaginative themes, pushing the boundaries of creativity and expression. Initiatives like the Loewe Craft Prize further enhanced the brand's prominence.
In March 2025, Jonathan Anderson announced his decision to step down from Loewe, marking the end of a period defined by artistic innovation. Anderson's legacy blends fashion with art and cannot be easily replicated. The contrasts of balancing tradition with modernity and classic craftsmanship with cutting-edge designs leave us wondering where he will make his mark next.
