How to Wear It: The White Button-Down

How to Wear It: The White Button-Down

By: Briley Rakow

While the modern era of social media and fast fashion can make it seem like trends come and go in no time at all, some closet staples are timeless. Having pieces in your wardrobe that are versatile makes it much easier to style “trendy” outfits without breaking the bank. One staple piece that has been particularly prominent in recent years is the white button-down. It may seem plain at first glance, but we have gathered up some of our team member’s favorite ways to style this simple piece to elevate outfits in any season.

Over a Swimsuit

If you are looking to dress up your summer look, Editor-In-Chief Elena Ossoski recommends throwing one on over your swimsuit to turn your cover-up into a fashion statement.

As a Light Jacket in Transition Weather

Styling a white button-down over dresses or a simple top with jean shorts is a great way to layer in the warmer months. “I love having it falling off my shoulder. It adds a little elevation to any outfit and is so easy to throw on with pretty much anything,” adds business team member Millie Conn.

Oversized

If you are looking to turn a white button-down into a full outfit, MC Middleton suggests wearing one “oversized with chunky boots and a ton of jewelry. It’s my go-to outfit and so easy to change up since it’s such a clean slate to work with.”

French-Tucked into Denim

Another favorite of our Editor-In-Chief, French-tucking your button-down into jeans is a simple but elegant way to style your outfit for cooler weather.

As a Layering Piece

The collar on a white button-down offers the opportunity to layer it underneath other clothing pieces to give more detail to an otherwise simple outfit. My personal favorite way to do this is underneath a sweater, to turn what could be a dull look into a statement. There are many options for layering this piece, with one favorite being wearing the shirt under a square-neck mini dress to create a more sophisticated look.

Having a minimalist wardrobe does not mean you are prevented from engaging in elevated fashion. Trying out new ways to style your staples can turn a simple piece like a white button-down into a closet necessity.
