The Revival of Bows

The Revival of Bows

By: Olivia Blackwell

An iconic symbol of femininity and youth, the bow is dominating 2023. Bow details have made a huge resurgence in the fashion landscape from runways to everyday street style.

Originating back to ancient times, bows are nothing new to fashion. Hair ribbons first gained popularity in the 16th and 17th centuries, made for all genders. Bows later saw a rise again in men’s fashion with the iconic bow tie, a staple we all know today.

The resurgence of bows goes hand-in-hand with the ballet-core trend that is dominating Instagram and Pinterest feeds. Ballet flats, bodysuits, tulle skirts, satin tops, and, of course, bows, all reflect this dreamy and coquette-core aesthetic currently growing online.

Designers like Carolina Herrera, Chanel, and Sandy Liang have fully embraced this trend, incorporatings bows as a major focal point in many of their runway looks. Although bows are often associated with ultra-femininity, many designers took their own sleek-minimalist twist on the trend. Whether they are arranged in the model’s hair or the prime focus of the look, bows have emerged as a staple across high fashion.

The 2023 bow obsession has also shined in the beauty scene. Simone Rocha displayed a unique play on the trend with their fall 2023 collection, where dainty ribbons were placed under models’ eyes to depict a stream of tears. This twist on the trend was named “bow eyeliner” by Fashion Twitter, introducing bows into the beauty world.

The rise of bows in fashion, ultimately, is a celebration of girlhood and individuality. If you are looking to add a feminine flair to your look, bows are the perfect addition.
