New Year, Old Trends

New Year, Old Trends

By: Elena Ossoski

2021 is the year that the nineties will be revived from the dead of tracksuits past. Clogs, baby tees, classic sneakers, baggy pants, and all the wonderful outfits that are cute yet easy to wear are on-trend once again. Since 2020 was the year of staying at home, we did whatever to make ourselves as comfortable as possible in a fairly uncomfortable situation.

To maintain a cocoon of comfort, many resorted to childhood tendencies like spending the better part of the day outdoors, so our clothes were naturally picked according to our activities for the day. If quarantine has taught us anything, it’s that comfort is vital (comfort in the sense that something inspires feelings of nostalgia.)

For Millenials and a handful of Gen Z kids, the nineties were our childhood. Spent running around outside, watching Disney Channel classics and looking up to outfits put together by the layer-obsessed style stars of the time like Hilary Duff, the Spears sisters, and the reigning queen of the early 2000s: Paris Hilton.

Stay ahead of the curve by rocking these blossoming trends.

Chunky enamel jewelry. Dainty gold baubles will always be a classic look but have some fun this year by sporting a statement piece or two.

Loafers with tube socks. Your grandparents probably wear this look daily, but white socks with shiny black loafers just became cool.

The out-of-season beret. No need to put away your wool berets after the winter season ends; the out-of-season beret is making a major comeback.

Clogs. Before you immediately turn down clogs since you’re probably picturing Danskos or traditional wooden clogs from Scandinavian regions like Sweden and Denmark, check out how easy it is to style a pair of trendy clogs.

What we’ll be seeing more of in the new year

Classic sneakers. Converse are back in a big way. Grab a pair of classic Chuck Taylors, or personalize your own pair.

Cardigans. Just to let you know, Taylor Swift didn’t start this trend. Long before the release of Folklore, cardigans were on their way to their biggest comeback yet.

Oversized trousers. I can’t think of anything more comfortable than baggy pants that are in style.

Layered tees. This has blown up over the last couple of months, so get used to seeing multiple tees at the same time.

Baby graphic tees. Last but not least, the nineties most notable trend is back: the teeny tiny graphic t-shirt. If you don’t feel like buying something new, just go through some of your old clothes from elementary school and whip out some fabric paint to add a personalized edge.
