After a nearly three-year break from releasing music, pop-rock fans around the world are celebrating the announcement of Olivia Rodrigo’s third album.
In an interview with British Vogue, the 23-year-old singer confirmed that her third album was underway. She told interviewers that her new album was full of “sad love songs,” and British Vogue claims that fan theories were correct, “specifically about the obsession and anxiety of it.”
Before the reveal, fans first received a clue about Rodrigo’s new album theme via a series of cryptic wall paintings. Appearing in various locations across the globe, walls were repainted daily as a part of the album’s teaser campaign.
As the days passed, the walls were painted lighter shades of pink, slowly departing from Rodrigo’s signature purple. The walls depicted the word “love.” Fans speculated that “love” could be the name of the album, as Rodrigo is known for her one-word album titles (Sour and Guts). However, on April 1, the walls received a final rebrand; “love” was removed, and the walls were painted a final shade of pink.
On April 2, Rodrigo took to Instagram to announce the title and cover of her third album. You Look Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love is set to release on June 12. The long title and less-edgy cover art are bold shifts from what her past albums led fans to expect, but the announcement still received high praise.
As part of the album promotion, Rodrigo also posted four videos of her placing pink heart-shaped padlocks on fences in various locations like New Jersey, Paris, London, and Los Angeles.
On April 7, the singer-songwriter announced that the first single from her junior album will be released on April 17. The single, titled “Drop Dead,” is sure to be the first of many hits on the album.
While uncertain of what to expect from this new era of Rodrigo’s music, fans are excited to hear it and anxiously await the first single.
