Saint Laurent Spring 2021 Ready-to-Wear

As Hedi Slimane stepped down to commence his controversial reign at Celine, Anthony Vaccarello was appointed to the helm of the world-renowned French luxury house, Saint Laurent, back in 2016. Since then, Vaccarello has created his own definition of Saint Laurent: uniforms of black from head-to-toe with spasmodic appearances of glamorous sequins and colorful florals.
The most recent installation to Vaccarello’s portfolio is the Women’s Summer 2021 Saint Laurent collection that was showcased as the sunset along the dunes of a mysterious, unknown desert dreamscape. The setting was intended to provoke an everlasting sense of imagination and hope. The eternal landscape that is the desert is the perfect backdrop for Vaccarello’s collection, which has been deeply inspired by the lack of practicality in the vast majority of the modern fashion industry as well as the alluring glamour of camp sleepwear that made its first appearances in the mid-1900s.
The intention is set as soon as the first model makes an appearance over the dunes: the collection consists only of believable, yet statement-worthy pieces. Plenty of simplistic black silhouettes and flowing, robe-like frocks make their way down the sand-covered runway, but it’s the recurring appearance of biker shorts paired with striking blazers that solidifies Vaccarello’s intentions for Saint Laurent as we move towards life post-pandemic one day at a time.
The blazer and biker short combination probably sounds familiar to you. Whether or not Vaccarello has read the countless articles online about the “modern-day Carrie Bradshaw,” he hit the nail right on the head. The wardrobe that he has concocted for the upcoming summer season acts as a mirror to the style choices that magazine columnists all over the world have made for television’s most famously fabulous character as if she were flesh and blood, walking the streets of New York City today.
The population of those who can afford the hot-off-the-runway pieces from Saint Laurent (or any luxury fashion house for that matter) is very minuscule, but the ideas and creativity for new outfit combinations are free. Throwing on your best business professional jacket with kitten heels and a pair of cycling shorts has never screamed “2020!” so loudly.
