The Best Dressed at the 2024 Met Gala
The Best Dressed at the 2024 Met Gala
By Emma Greene
Titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” and inspired by J.G. Ballard’s The Garden of Time, this year’s Met Gala theme left much to interpretation. The gala’s best dressed leaned into garden-inspired florals, timeless beauty, and archival couture.
Zendaya in Maison Margiela by John Galliano
A co-chair of the 2024 Met Gala, Zendaya knows how to stun. The veteran attendee wore not one, not two, but three archival looks at last night’s gala.
She walked the green carpet Galliano’s recreation of a Dior Spring Summer 1999 look and a Givenchy Spring Summer 1996 gown, one of Galliano’s debut designs at the house. Stylist Law Roach styled the second look with a headpiece from Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2007 collection. Zendaya changed into a custom third look by Greek designer Celia Kritharioti before presenting with her fellow co-chairs.
Tyla in Balmain
Dressed as the “Sands of Time”, Tyla’s Balmain gown transformed her into a statue of gardens past. Her look featured sand on the shoulder and an hourglass clutch. The dress’s rock-like structure limited the singer’s mobility and required her to be lifted up the museum’s famous stairs. The hem of the dress was shortened later in the night.
Bad Bunny in Maison Margiela by John Galliano
Bad Bunny co-chaired the gala in a custom Maison Margiela tux. Paired with hoof-like shoes, a matching hat, sunglasses, and a bouquet, it is clear that the accessories made this look memorable. The artist’s monochrome bouquet was made of flor de maga, the national flower of Puerto Rico and the same flower on which Sleeping Beauty pricked her finger in versions of the tale.
Gigi Hadid in Thom Browne
Created by 70 artisans over 13,500 hours, Hadid’s Thom Browne gown was embellished with 2,800,000 beads. While walking the carpet, her reworked trench coat train required five men to carry it up the stairs.
Wisdom Kaye in Robert Wun
Fashion influencer and model Wisdom Kaye made his Met Gala debut in a custom suit with scorched details. The look embraced decomposition as an element of time.
Sarah Jessica Parker in Richard Quinn
Parker’s tea-length Richard Quinn gown embraced the garden element of this year’s theme. Including trellis-like boning and thousands of hand-embroidered gems, Parker shined on the event’s green carpet.
Elle Fanning in Balmain
This transparent Balmain gown was inspired by a scene of frosted florals in “The Garden of Time.” Paired with Cartier jewelry and frosty birds, Fanning has raised the bar for tasteful “naked” dressing on the red carpet.
Nicki Minaj in Marni
Minaj’s Marni gown was a recreation of a 1950s Balenciaga look that will appear in the “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibit. The rapper was given a special backless chair inside the gala to accommodate the gown’s metal sculptures.
Kendall Jenner in Givenchy by Alexander McQueen
Jenner embraced archival aspects of the gala’s theme in a never-before-warn Givenchy gown designed by Alexander McQueen in 1999. Prior to Monday’s carpet, the gown had spent its 25-year life displayed on a mannequin.
Phoebe Dynevor in Victoria Beckham
Dynevor’s appearance on the green carpet marked the debut of Victoria Beckham’s designs at the Met Gala. The sheer gown featured draping flowers that were hand-dyed in an English rose pink, selected to complement Dynevor’s skin tone.
