The Fashion-Forward Finale of And Just Like That
The Fashion-Forward Finale of And Just Like That…
By: Audrey Cooper
Calling all Sex and the City fans – the season two finale of the classic show’s sequel series And Just Like That… aired August 24th on HBO Max. The end of season two gives the audience high-end fashion moments, a highly anticipated (and brief) Samantha Jones cameo, Aiden and Carrie fallouts and resolutions, and a teary-eyed goodbye to Carrie’s iconic apartment from the original Sex and the City show.
Fashion is an important piece of the show’s success, right next to the leading four characters in the original six seasons, two movies, and now the sequel series, with trends constantly stemming from the show. The second season of And Just Like That… has been no exception to this ongoing stream of innovative looks.
The leading lady, Carrie Bradshaw herself, dressed in head-to-toe Oscar de la Renta for her last dinner party and night in her apartment. Molly Rogers, costume director of And Just Like That…, outdoes herself with Carrie’s silver and black checkerboard gown, pairing the dress with sheer, beaded sleeves, leggings, and Rene Caoville sequined shoes.
Miranda turned heads as well in a caped, fitted two-tone dress by ROKSANDA, accessorized with a brown APC shoulder bag, perfectly matching her infamous fiery, red hair. Miranda’s look in the finale of And Just Like That… illustrates the sophisticated, reserved business-woman style that Miranda has embodied throughout her tenure on the show.
Charlotte joins in on the fun dressed in a floral Markarian dress with an 0ff-the-shoulder ruffle, paired with a Benedetta plexiglass clutch. Other honorable mentions include Seema’s silver Givenchy dress and Anthony’s gold rose boutonniere. With a plethora of metallic pieces and puffed sleeves, Carrie’s extravagant dinner party left viewers in awe.
Samantha Jones, the only original character that had yet to appear on And Just Like That…, finally reconnects with Carrie in the finale via phone call in the back of a car. Although only making a 75-second appearance, Samantha never fails to grab attention. Wearing a metallic trench coat draped over a bright red dress paired with her signature thick jewelry and Fendi First green leather clutch, she is still the epitome of high-fashion class. Although the two characters were oceans away, both carry Fendi bags, a long-time Sex and the City favorite accessory. To accompany Samantha’s long-anticipated appearance, Patricia Field, longtime costume designer for Sex and the City, returned to style Kim Cattrall for the role.
For any of us that resonate with Carrie Bradshaw’s intense shopping addiction and shoe obsession, the third episode of the season is a must-watch. Carrie impulsively decides to take herself on a major shoe shopping spree in order to cure her poor mood (if only we all had Carrie Bradshaw’s wallet). The shoe haul included Rene Caovilla’s crystal-encrusted Cleo heel, Loewe’s rose-heeled strappy sandal and balloon heels, two pairs of Jimmy Choos (because why stop at one?), two pairs of Gucci heels, Giuseppe Zanotti crystal mules, and so on. This is the Carrie we all know and love, a decades-long creator of major closet envy.
Although the finale held some of the most glamorous outfits of the season, our top outfit picks are found in the Met Gala episode, in which the characters all glam up for the “Veiled Beauty” themed event. Lisa Todd Wexley, the trio’s new Upper East Side friend, impresses everyone in a striking red Valentino gown and feather headdress. Lisa struts across Fifth Avenue with her husband following behind to carry the train, creating one of the most memorable moments of the season.
Not to be upstaged, Carrie made the last-minute decision to rewear her infamous Vivienne Westwood wedding dress first seen in 2008. Carrie confronts the pain that comes with the dress in style, and accessorizes with turquoise opera gloves and heels with a birdcage veil. And Just Like That… costume designers Molly Rogers and Danny Santiago comment on the look, explaining that while this pick was a great easter egg for fans, it was also a wonderful reflection of the past and the fashion industry’s focus on sustainability.
The show’s creator Michael Patrick King has confirmed that it will return for a third season. As far as concerns of Kim Cattrall making another appearance as Samantha, we will have to wait and see. One thing is certain, however: Carrie Bradshaw and her friends will continue to inspire fashion-lovers for a little while longer.
