Following a five-year hiatus, the highly anticipated Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show returned to screens receiving mixed reactions.

The show intended to represent a bold rebranding, embracing inclusivity and captivating industry insiders and the public. A high-stakes move by the brand, the 2024 show sought to re-establish Victoria's Secret’s core elements while resonating with today’s cultural demands.

The runway featured models of varying body types and ages, aiming to redefine what it means to be a Victoria’s Secret Angel. Iconic angels like Alessandra Ambrosio and Behati Prinsloo graced the runway, along with a few new faces like Alex Cosani and Paloma Elsesser. Many viewers were refreshed to see this switch after years of the brand’s association with specific beauty stereotypes, “I think the world has changed to see that, as women, we don’t have to be a stereotype and to fit into one mold,” Tyra Banks told Harper's Bazaar on her return to the runway after 20 years.

Despite the celebration of diversity, the road to redemption comes with challenges. Some felt this year's display was underwhelming and lacked components of the show’s core identity: big blowout hair, glitter, and the iconic Fantasy Bra, to name a few. Additionally, the authenticity of the rebranding is questionable. Is it a genuine commitment or a calculated marketing strategy? Critics argue that while the show may have made strides, it must continue to uphold these values beyond a single show.

The reworked runway show sought to blend the brand’s core identity with a focus on inclusivity, but it is up for debate if these efforts will bring Victoria's Secret back to its leading position in the lingerie market and truly connect with today’s audiences for years to come.
