What They’re Wearing in: Washington, D.C.

With many young professionals flocking to the capitol city, Washington D.C’s street style balances corporate business attire with a healthy dose of trends. Throughout its various neighborhoods, style can vary greatly, but these are some of the trends that were consistently spotted on the streets of D.C.

Patterned blazers

Across the city center, various patterned blazers were seen on their way to work each morning. Smaller houndstooth prints and herringbone were woven into the coats. What the attire lacked in color was compensated for by texture and shape. Cropped blazers had been paired with high-waisted trousers for a more modern look on the pantsuit. Tweed blazers were especially prevalent.

Structured wide-leg pants

Replacing the skinny-legged trousers are stiff, wide-legged pants. Shades of cream and tan were especially popular as springtime approached the city. Most paired the structured pants with a flowy, colorful blouse.

Round sunglasses

Round frame sunglasses were spotted throughout the National Mall as tourists explored the large green space in the middle of the city. As people prepared to celebrate the Cherry Blossom festival, individuals moved outdoors and into the sun.

Tote bags

Printed tote bags featuring bands or artwork carried everything from books to headphones. Structured designer tote bags were also used to carry extra pairs of shoes to change into at the office. D.C is the city of the large bag.

Extra walking shoes

The majority of people in D.C had multiple pairs of shoes with them at all times. Cute heels peeked out from handbags while neutral sneakers crisscrossed the city. Supergas and Vejas were some of the most popular brands throughout the city.

Although D.C is often not considered as fashion-forward as cities like New York or Los Angeles, it has a practicality and uniqueness that distinguishes it from other American cities. With a rich history and a host of career opportunities for young people, local designers are pushing for D.C to step out of its “office-wear” persona.
