What They’re Wearing in: Milan, Italy

By: Addie Flasck

The city of Milan is the heart of the Italian fashion and luxury world. Though the recent health crisis resulted in a disappointing bout of tourism restrictions and canceled fashion shows, it is safe to say that the past few seasons were only the calm before the storm. This summer, with tourism at its peak, Milan fashion is back with a vengeance. This is what they are wearing in the fashion capital of the world.

Pleated Midi-skirts

In the heat of the summer, it is no surprise that the midi skirt is one of the most recurring wardrobe items seen on the streets in Milan. Although the midi skirt itself is a classic, the city’s residents prove that it does not need to be boring. Opting for skirts with vibrant colors, patterns, or lace is a fool-proof way to invite the spirit of summer into your wardrobe.

White-on-white

All white everything is a Milan-approved shortcut to looking refined, clean, and sophisticated without the feeling that you are baking under the sun. The understated tank and linen pants combo is airy, chic, and one of the city’s cult favorites.

Noisy Prints

If the thought of white-on-white makes you yawn, do not worry— fashion in Milan knows no bounds. The unlimited possibilities within this city’s style profile leaves more than enough room for pattern experimentation. Lively prints and colors are a sure-fire way to stand out amongst the city’s well-versed fashion gurus.

Designer Sneakers

Though it may be a painful effort to put heels and platforms aside, the hardest goodbyes bring the warmest hellos. A pair of eye-catching sneakers is a practical alternative to shoes that may not be suitable for a city that revolves around pedestrians. And, in Milan, it seems that they are quite the investment piece. Big-name designer sneakers are a pillar of this city’s streetwear.

The effortlessly cool appeal of Milan’s favorite styles is enough evidence on its own that the city is a frontrunner in the fashion industry. While it may seem intimidating, there is something exciting about being immersed in a fashion culture where anything goes —a feeling the people of Milan know better than anyone else.
