What You Need To Know Before the 2025 Met Gala

By Sophie Amen — April 21, 2025

On Oct. 9, 2024, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced the Costume Institute's new exhibition titled “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” The theme is said to be based on Black dandyism and inspired by the work of Monica Miller.

Miller’s 2009 book,“Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity,” explores the concept of Black dandyism and its role in shaping Black identity across history. She examines how Black men have used fashion and style as a form of self-expression, resistance, and social commentary. By analyzing figures like Frederick Douglass, Miller argues the role of fashion in redefining cultural narratives. This concept signifies the widespread transformation of Black men into style and fashion greats from the 18th century to the present, resonating with African American history in many ways.

The exhibit is set to feature menswear and will be organized in 12 sections, signifying dandy style. Drawing from this, the 2025 Met Gala’s theme is “Tailored For You.” The dress code, aligning with the exhibition’s focus, emphasizes the concentration on classic menswear and allows attendees to interpret the theme through personalization and individuality.

Beyond the theme and dress code, the event’s co-chairs are equally as important and influential. Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour are set to serve as the co-chairs, while LeBron James will serve as an honorary chair. These prominent figures in culture, the arts, and sports have pushed the envelope of men’s fashion.

This year’s Met Gala marks the revival of the host committee tradition, where influential figures are enlisted to further the gala’s mission. Members this year will include André 3000, Doechii, Ayo Edebiri, Janelle Monáe, Edward Enninful, and many more.

The 2025 Met Gala is expected to make history. Come May, fashion’s most anticipated event will debut countless statements and interpretations in celebration of Black style and tailored elegance.
