6 Things to Watch to Get in the Fall Spirit

6 Things to Watch to Get in the Fall Spirit

By: Kate Kimberlin

The end of Labor Day Weekend marks the end of summer for many. Gone are all-white outfits, days by the pool, and summer blockbusters. With the onset of the fall semester, many are anxious for cozy sweaters, pumpkin spice lattes, and the sight of the leaves changing. Getting in the fall spirit can be difficult in 80-degree weather but, luckily for us, there are plenty of movies and TV shows to live vicariously through while awaiting the leaves to fall.

Gilmore Girls

Arguably the crown jewel of fall media, Gilmore Girls is a classic first stop when trying to get in the fall mood. The quaint, hilarious sitcom follows mother Lorelai and daughter Rory through their many misadventures in their small Connecticut town. While the show is not perpetually stuck in fall, the costuming of large cable knit sweaters and brown leather jackets gives off a festive impression. Throw in the constant changing of the leaves and mentions of coffee at least once per episode, and I promise you will have a sudden urge to turn your AC down, throw on a sweater, and make some coffee.

Gilmore Girls is currently streaming on Netflix.

The Harry Potter Franchise

If you have yet to experience the wondrous world of Harry Potter, there is no better time to start than in the fall. Based upon the novels by J.K. Rowling, the eight films follow the adventures of three wizards at a magical boarding school and all of their adventures with magical foe. The films are cozy, fantastical, and fun for the whole family. No matter your age, the adventures of Harry, Ron, and Hermione over their years at Hogwarts are sure to warm your heart.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is currently streaming on Peacock.

Practical Magic

A wonderful trip to the 90s, Practical Magic is a spooky trip through small-town Massachusetts, following a set of sisters raised by a spiritual aunt. They separate with age, but are thrown back together when one discovers an issue with a lifelong family curse. The sisters, played by Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, are hilarious, lovable, and dressed to the nines in front of the beautiful coastal backdrop. This, mixed with the overtones of many witchy and wonderful subplots, makes the film perfect to watch at the changing of the seasons.

Practical Magic is currently streaming on HBO Max.

Knives Out

A more recent classic, Ryan Murphy’s take on a whodunit has captured a more contemporary take on fall beauty. The film follows a lucrative family after the mysterious death of a patriarch, and the proceeding estate battle among the bitter family. The star-studded cast runs into trouble with murder investigator Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig, and chaos ensues. With the setting of a mysterious mansion in the middle of the forest, quick-witted humor from wonderfully written characters, and a huge twist in the end, it is hard to say no. The costuming is modern and worthy of re-creation no matter what your personal style is.

Knives Out is currently available to rent or buy on Apple TV, YouTube TV or Amazon Prime.

Kiki’s Delivery Service

While this might be a more eccentric choice, it is still a great way to get in the fall mood. Kiki’s Delivery Service is an animated Studio Ghibli film that follows a budding witch on an adventure to find herself. Starting a delivery service powered by her broomstick, Kiki’s coming-of-age journey is joyful and fun. In true Studio Ghibli fashion, the ending could make you cry, but it is perfect for those in need of a fall pick me up.

Kiki’s Delivery Service is currently streaming on HBO Max.

Ghostbusters

Last on the list is another classic, but a great way to get in the spirit of Halloween early. The film follows the work of four scientists in New York that turn into ghost hunters after being forced out of their university grants. Spooky, funny, albeit with some poorly timed special effects, Ghostbusters is a must-watch for anyone looking to dive into the spooky season. The humor and paranormal activity balance perfectly, and the setting is complete with picturesque views of fall in New York.

Ghostbusters is currently streaming on Hulu.

While it does not feel like fall outside quite yet, hopefully these TV shows and movies will put those in the spirit that want to celebrate early. For all things fall and fashion, be sure to keep reading Square Magazine and follow us on Instagram here.
