A Rundown of Sinners’ Record-Breaking Awards Season

A Rundown of Sinners’ Record-Breaking Awards Season

By Emily Smith - April 6, 2026

With a record-breaking award season coming to a close, the momentum of Sinners’ award campaign has reached an all-time high, finding its conclusion at the Oscars. After the biggest night of cinema celebration, here are some of the highlights of the film’s accomplishments.

Compared to its budget of around $90 million, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners grossed a massive $369 million at the box office. This earned the film a Golden Globe win for Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, as well as several re-releases.

The film was also awarded Best Original Score at the Grammys, the Golden Globes, the Critics’ Choice Awards, and the BAFTAS. Composer Ludwig Göransson, as expected, took home the award at this year’s Oscars to solidify a clean sweep on March 15.

History was made with the announcement of the film’s Oscar nominations. Sinners not only met the record of 14 nominations, previously held by All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land; it exceeded it by two. With a record-breaking 16 nominations, the film is now the most Academy-nominated film of all time.

Ryan Coogler also had a phenomenal awards season, taking home Best Original Screenplay at most of the major award shows. The movie’s nominated actors and actresses saw exponential growth in the momentum of their campaigns heading into the latter half of awards season, with Wunmi Mosaku taking home Best Supporting Actress at the BAFTAS. Despite losing Best Picture at the Academy Awards, Sinners beat One Battle After Another for Best Ensemble at the Actor Awards.

Sinners did, however, take the win for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars. This was expected, as the film had previously swept this category at all major award shows.

Autumn Durald Arkapaw made history as the first woman and woman of color to win Best Cinematography at the Academy Awards. She recognized all the women in the room during an emotion-evoking speech and was celebrated by the cast of Sinners.

Perhaps the most well-received accolade for Sinners was Michael B. Jordan’s unprecedented win at this year’s Actor Awards. Despite giving an excellent performance as twin brothers Smoke and Stack, Jordan had yet to receive an award at a major award show. After being awarded Best Male Actor in a Leading Role at the Actor Awards, Jordan made the Oscar race for Best Actor even more exciting.

Unsurprisingly,  he took home the Academy Award for Best Actor. Jordan has now become the sixth Black man in history to win in this category, joining the ranks of legendary actors Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, and Will Smith.
