Are Influencers Slowly Replacing Celebrities?

By Campbell Baker — October 23 2026

Social media has completely changed the way we view fame. People who were once ordinary internet users now attend major events and work with some of the biggest brands in the world. Influencers are becoming just as recognizable as movie stars or musicians, which raises the question: are influencers slowly replacing celebrities?

Emma Chamberlain is a great example. She started making videos on YouTube and eventually became a recognizable name in the fashion industry. Her appearances at the Met Gala show just how much influence social media personalities can have outside of their original platforms.

Alix Earle transitioned from social media to mainstream celebrity status even faster. Earle started gaining attention on TikTok by posting videos about her everyday life as a college student. Now, she has built a career around her online presence and works with major brands. She was even a finalist on Dancing With the Stars and appeared in a Super Bowl commercial.

These women did not become famous through the traditional Hollywood entertainment industry. They built audiences online that eventually opened doors to opportunities usually associated with celebrities.

So, why are people so influenced?

One reason influencers have become so popular is that they seem more relatable. When viewers watch someone's videos every day, it can feel like they know them personally. People see what products they use and hear about what is happening in their lives. That connection can make influencers feel real and trustworthy. However, just because influencers seem relatable does not necessarily mean everything they share is genuine. Behind the scenes, many are paid to promote products and post specific content, and their online lives can be just as meticulously planned as those of traditional celebrities.

Traditional celebrities still have a major influence on popular culture. Zendaya, for example, continues to make headlines through her acting career and fashion choices. But, celebrities are now sharing the spotlight with people who became famous entirely through social media — without a traditional entertainment background.

Influencers are appearing at events that were once associated with Hollywood stars. They are being invited to fashion shows and becoming the faces of major campaigns. The distinction between a celebrity and an influencer is not as clear as it used to be.

So, are influencers actually replacing celebrities? Not necessarily. Instead, social media seems to be changing what qualifies someone as a celebrity in the first place. You no longer have to star in a movie or release music to become a household name. Sometimes, all it takes is an audience that genuinely wants to follow your life.

Influencers may not be replacing traditional celebrities entirely, but they are proving that fame doesn't have to start in Hollywood anymore.
