Get Square-d Away with D-Clutter by Delia

Let’s face it, organization is the key to a productive lifestyle.  Having a put-together space goes hand-in-hand with getting work done.  We all want to be tidy, but some cannot carry out this desire.

For Delia Vandevelde, a senior Hospitality Management major at the University of Mississippi from Birmingham, Alabama, the knack for organization has been present from the very beginning. Just recently, Vandevelde launched her own company--D-Clutter by Delia--which offers a multitude of organizational services that cater to all needs to bring back the necessary order to your space.

Vandevelde’s love for organization began at an early age.

“I have always been a very tidy person,” she told us. “Even as a kid, my mom said I would line up my stuffed animals and dolls before going to sleep.”

That passion for organization only grew in fall 2017 when she reached her freshman year at Ole Miss and was living in the Martin Hall with a roommate.  Her tidiness was noticed by many around her, causing many of her friends to reach out and ask her to help them organize their spaces, as well.  This time sparked an even greater interest for her in the service of organization.
“After helping out friends in college,” Vandevelde explained, “I began to help family friends back at home during winter and summer break and truly found a passion for home organizing.”

Fast-forward to May 25, 2020: the day when Vandevelde’s lifelong dream of owning her own company came true.

“I like to think I am a ‘go-getter’ and have always dreamed of owning my own company someday.  Not knowing it would be a personal organizing company, I just knew I wanted to start something on my own.”

Vandevelde has two years of experience interning for a wedding planner in Birmingham, AL who started her business at the age of 24.  This experience further affirmed Vandevelde’s desire to own her own company someday.

“I asked her lots of questions and gave her the vision for D-Clutter, and she was nothing but encouraging to me! She helped me go out of my comfort zone and start my business.” The unfortunate circumstances of COVID-19 brought out a positive for Vandevelde as she was able to plan and officially launch her business.

D-Clutter by Delia offers a variety of services, with the three main services being “Home Organizing,” “Moving Out,” and “Welcome Home.”  Included in the Home Organizing Package, Vandevelde will come to organize any areas in your home that need decluttering and tidying up. With the Moving Out Package, Vandevelde will help you purge before your move, as well as creating a detailed packing list, grouping similar items together so that moving out and moving in will be easier on your end. The Welcome Home package is great for anyone who recently moved houses and has not quite figured out the best use of their new space.

Alongside these main services, she offers two smaller packages, “Mini Maintenance” and “College Clean-Up,” which is geared towards college-aged students.

Although Vandevelde loves to tidy up all spaces, her favorite is a pantry.  “Something about an aesthetically pleasing pantry brings me so much joy,” she said. Having a messy room can affect many other aspects of daily life, and Vandevelde understands this fully.  She said, “If your home isn’t organized, chances are, you are probably going to clutter other parts of your life, as well.”

Some of her favorite tips and tricks to kickstart the organization process in your space include:

  • Using the same types of hangers in a closet to keep clothes orderly

  • Using storage bins to keep items aligned

  • Using cutlery trays for the “junk drawer” that most people have

Throughout Vandevelde’s years at Ole Miss, she has become well-versed in the proper ways to keep everything orderly as a college student.

She explained, “I think one of the best pieces of advice for college students is to keep a planner and put everything in it! This may not be related to home organizing, but this will help you keep track of all assignments and random events that take place.”

Alongside this necessity, she also advises making your bed in the morning as it will help you to start your day off fresh and prepare you for all of the work that lies ahead that day.  Keeping your living space mess-free can help to alleviate stress.

Vandevelde believes in the power of organizing and the effect it can have on daily life.

Vandevelde says, “I truly believe that having a tidy home enhances your overall life and puts you in a more positive and stress-free mood.”  The success of her business proves this theory.
