The Pilates Princess: How exercise has become an aesthetic
The Pilates Princess: How exercise has become an aesthetic
By Anna Grace Bowling — April 15, 2025
Pilates is a mind and body exercise experience that was first coined in the early 20th century and has recently become a trendy form of exercise. Pilates is all about elegance, balance, and control. Women everywhere have taken up this form of movement and turned it into an entire aesthetic.
Pilates apparel leans toward sleek, form-fitting outfits that allow for freedom of movement. Usually in shades of ethereal pastel, you will find the average “pilates princess” wearing anything from leggings to comfortable yet flattering sports bras, emphasizing the effect of being “put together” and centered.
Reformer pilates is arguably the most trendiest workout of 2025. This workout involves a specialized piece of equipment called a “reformer,” which consists of a sliding carriage, adjustable strings for resistance, straps, and a footbar; all designed to enhance the traditional yoga-like experience.
While it may look easy because of the lack of heavy movement, pilates girls everywhere will attest to the fact that reformer pilates builds mental and physical strength, muscle definition, flexibility, and balance. Brands like Alo Yoga, Beyond Yoga, Set Active, and Aritzia have become immensely popular among pilates lovers over the past few years. These brands design workout sets that offer a blend of quiet luxury, comfort, and effortless style. The color palettes often feature soft neutrals, muted pastels, and bold earth tones, creating an easy transition from the yoga mat to streetwear.
The Alo Yoga gym in New York City has become a hot-spot for influencers to not only market the Alo brand, but also participate in reformer pilates workouts. Celebrities like Jake Shane, Alix Earle, Glen Powell, Olivia Jade, Brigette Pheloung (Acquired Style), and Kendall Jenner are just a few of the many regulars at the gym in Hudson. The rise of social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok has helped fuel the popularity of pilates, with influencers and fitness experts showcasing their own pilates journey and encouraging a new generation of people to workout.
Boutique pilates studios have become increasingly popular partially due to the unique elegance that the interior of each studio provides. Power Movement Pilates studio opened in Oxford in January and the demand to try a class is high. Movement is important for both your physical and mental health, and the “pilates princess” aesthetic has proven that when you look good, you feel good too.
