Holiday Decor for the Perpetual Modernist
Holiday Decor for the Perpetual Modernist

The nostalgia that arises at the beginning of Christmastime is unmatched. While prepping for the holiday season, gift shopping, and cooking for your extended family may seem stressful, but there is nothing that can steal the joy that comes from decorating your home with your family.
More often than not, Christmas decorations tend to be one of two things: outdated or cheesy. While most holiday decor is passed down from one generation to the next, there exists ample opportunity to encourage a sense of modernism in your home during “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.”
For young control-freaks like myself, the holiday decorating process can be frustrating at times when the stash of ornaments and hokey-sleighs do not necessarily coordinate with the thoughtfully chosen decor that already adorns your home. Modern interior design has always captivated me, but the holiday decor selection on the market at any given time rarely compliments the contemporary yet still personalized look that I prefer in a home.
Showcase your love for Christmas without sacrificing the aura you’ve created in your home with the help of your eye for modern design. Utilize the decorating techniques that will keep your holiday season merry and bright!
Add festive knick-knacks.
For stylish--yet timeless--touches to soak in the holiday season, scatter miscellaneous candles, subtle stars, and classic Christmas storybooks. Like Eloise At Christmastime and How The Grinch Stole Christmas, childhood favorites act as the perfect surface for festive mugs, free-standing candles, and extra matches. The adorable ‘Peace on Earth’ mug pictured above can be found at Anthropologie.
Incorporate seasonless greenery.
When picking out new greenery, you don’t have to strictly stick to the traditional pine tree. Christmas cacti, Fiddle-leaf figs, and ivory orchids throughout the home can help normalize the presence of a random tree in the middle of a room.
Stick with neutrals.
For those of you, like myself, who are impatiently awaiting Christmas day, use a neutral advent or countdown calendar to minimize any potential distraction from the things that permanently reside in your home. If your home decor already revolves around a neutral palette with select pops of color, sticking with the same color palette when choosing holiday decorations will help keep your home’s overall design aesthetic intact.
This year, let’s seize the opportunity to keep the warmth and jolly spirit of the holiday season alive. We wish you all a very happy holiday season!
