2 Beauty Trends That Stood Out This Year

By: Bella Duncan

With an ever-evolving idea of beauty, the biggest beauty nods of 2023 came from influencers and celebrities alike. The year boasted many beauty trends but two that stood out were “clean girl” makeup and voluminous blowouts.

It seems as though at each turn a new celebrity has launched a beauty or skincare line – Rhode, Rare Beauty, and Haus Labs to name a few. Clean girl makeup and the clean girl aesthetic were first introduced in 2022, but this year, the essence of the concept was taken up a notch. Health-conscious wellness trends made their way into beauty with 2023’s version of clean girl makeup. A trend once focused on the vision of looking clean and kempt snowballed into a trend of ingredient consciousness and skin prep. Several brands devoted to clean ingredients catapulted into the spotlight this year, such as Tower 28, the first and only brand to follow the National Eczema Association's Ingredient Guidelines. Clean girl makeup has since consisted of SPF, luxury lip balms, and skin-conscious products, as well as an emphasis on creating the perfect base through skincare. French pharmacy products, celebrity makeup lines, and unique tools like gua shas and LED therapy were all the rage in 2023.

Dyson Air Wraps, heatless curling rods, and a revival of traditional blow dryer styles replaced the typical flat ironed and curled hairstyles in 2023. The blowout trend played into the natural, healthy hair look, going hand-in-hand with the clean girl aesthetic. Longer lasting styles, less heat, and the resurgence of hair rollers and round brushes made these looks a reality. High-end rollers and tools from brands such as Drybar and Luxy Hair’s influencer collaboration with AcquiredStyle turned this once dated practice into the biggest hair trend of the year.

2023 experimented with many different beauty looks, but fundamentals rang true. Beauty building blocks like clean girl makeup and blowouts reintroduced many forgotten trade skills like the simple power of a round brush and a rich moisturizer.
