Transition Weather Skincare

As the weather gets cooler and the fall season brings crisp breezes, it is important to make changes in your beauty routine to ensure finally getting back to sweater weather and pumpkin spice lattes do not come at the expense of your skin. As fall and winter roll in, it is natural for your skin to dry out without consistent humidity. Lucky for you, we have some tips for how to keep your summer glow well into the new season.

One of the biggest struggles in the cooler seasons is battling a lack of proper moisturization. Your skin is constantly losing moisture through a process called transepidermal water loss in which water is not held into the skin, causing it to evaporate. This process is amplified in the cold weather, making a good moisturizer a vital part of your skincare routine. Even if your skin is more oily than dry, thick moisturizers can help maintain a healthy balance of moisture in your skin, especially when used at night.

Some of my favorites are the SkinFix Lipid Peptide Cream and Youth to the People Adaptogen Cream. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid and lipids help lock in moisture overnight, keeping your skin bouncy and glowing in all weather types. These ingredients can be found in serums as well, which are a great way to focus on specific issues you want to combat.

One myth about preventing dry skin is that you should avoid exfoliating, but that is not necessarily the case. Of course, in all months of the year, you should avoid over-exfoliation, but using a non-irritating chemical exfoliant can actually help with holding in moisture long-term as it cleans out your pores. Ensuring the cleanser you are using is not stripping your skin is another good way to make sure you are protecting your skin’s natural oils.

Our last tip is an often overlooked skincare step, even in the summer months: sunscreen. Sunscreen is so important to the overall health of your skin, even if you are not outside much. Aside from preventing premature aging, it is another layer of protection against the cold air. Skincare is always an important part of your health and wellness, but it is especially important to consider as we move into the harsher weather that tends to accompany the transition into everyone’s favorite season.
