The Council of Fashion Designers of America, Inc. (CFDA) hosted their annual fashion awards show on November 6, 2023 in celebration of American fashion designers, brands, and influencers who keep American style at the forefront of the fashion industry.
This year’s event was hosted by Anne Hathaway, who arrived in a blue and white denim, floor-length skirt paired with a strapless blue top, all designed by Ralph Lauren. Hathaway was a last-minute addition to the hosting position, as the original host, Sarah Jessica Parker, was unable to attend.
Many awards were handed out over the course of the evening, with some familiar faces taking the stage to accept their awards. Willy Chavarria took home the American Menswear Designer of the Year award and Catherine Holsten of Khaite was awarded American Womenswear Designer of the Year for the second year in a row. The winner for the 2023 American Accessory Designer of the Year went to none other than Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen of The Row.
Gwyneth Paltrow, actress and founder of Goop, was the recipient of this year’s Innovation Award presented by Amazon Fashion. Paltrow graced the event in a simple yet chic all-black ensemble from Goop’s G. Label. The Shop With Google American Emerging Designer of the Year award went to Rachel Scott of Diotima, and Vera Wang received the Board of Director’s Tribute, celebrating her decades of influence within bridal fashion. Jonathan Anderson was honored as the International Designer of the Year for his work with J.W. Anderson and Loewe.
Serena Williams was the first athlete to ever win the prestigious Fashion Icon award. Williams, who is known as an international tennis champion, attended fashion school in between competitions. She launched her brand S by Serena in 2018, followed by a jewelry line shortly after. Williams wore a shining black gown with a wrap-around puffed sleeve designed by CFDA board chairman Thom Browne.
Other notable red carpet attendees included Emma Chamberlain and Lil Yachty in Thom Browne, Kim Kardashian in Chrome Hearts, Chase Stokes in Teddy Vonranson, and Lola Tung in Balmain.
While international fashion is celebrated often, it is important to call attention to all the incredible designers right here in America. Innovation and classic American style were celebrated hand-in-hand at this year’s CFDA Fashion Awards, and we are sure that these designers will continue to push American fashion forward on the international stage.
