21st Century Style Icon: Florence Pugh

21st Century Style Icon: Florence Pugh

By: Abby Fulmar

Florence Pugh is an English actress who has skyrocketed into fame over the past few years due to her phenomenal acting skills and risque fashion choices. She is best known for her captivating performances in films such as Midsommar, Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, and most recently, Don’t Worry Darling, a psychological thriller where she acts opposite Harry Styles. Pugh seems to gravitate towards films that include heavy costuming, so it is not a surprise that she has made a splash in the fashion world with her own unique, sometimes controversial, style.

When asked about the reasoning behind some of Pugh’s interesting fashion choices, her stylist Rebecca Corbin-Murray told British Vogue, “She has a unique way of looking at the world, and fashion is an extension of this.” Pugh is most commonly seen in bold, colorful pieces, many of which were handcrafted for her by Italian luxury brand Valentino.

Through her relationship with Valentino, she has been able to combine her love for campy fashion with promoting body positivity, a topic that is very important to her.

As a petite woman, her 5ft 3 in silhouette is not the conventional body type seen styled by luxury designers, but she has not let societal expectations stop her from embracing her body to the fullest. In June of this year, Florence made headlines when she attended the Valentino Haute Couture fashion show in a hot pink gown, completely sheer from the waist up. She seemed nonchalant when asked about the harsh backlash she received, saying, “I was comfortable with my small breasts…and showing them like that aggravated people that I was comfortable.”

There is no denying that Florence Pugh has left her mark on the fashion world both on and off screen. In a time where many influencers seem to choose the minimalist, safe route, Pugh is not afraid to show personality through her daring fashion choices. She has helped women feel confident in their bodies and has helped them realize that any style of clothing, even those made by top-tier designers, can look glamorous on all body types. Her witty use of fashion has established Florence Pugh as not just an icon of 21st century fashion, but an icon of the 21st century body positivity movement as well.
