Princess Diana’s Lasting Legacy

Princess Diana’s Lasting Legacy

By: Abi-Leigh Doss

The late Princess Diana of Wales was hailed for her glamorous fashion certifying her as one of the most influential fashion icons of the 20th century. The marriage of Diana and Prince Charles of Wales hurled her into the public spotlight. Diana remained the public’s fixation from the beginning of their marriage in 1981 until she died in 1997. Diana sustained her image through every stage of their relationship and is praised for looks both pre- and post-divorce.

Diana was known for her bold color choices and striking patterns, while simultaneously preserving the elegant style that is prevalent throughout the royal tradition. The driving force behind the late Princess’s style was her admirable confidence. Diana was a loving mother and humanitarian and—amidst the confounds of British royal tradition—she was refreshingly human. Diana was most proud of her two boys, William and Harry, within whom she tried to instill her personal beliefs. In a quote about her boys, she said, “I want my boys to have an understanding of people's emotions, their insecurities, people’s distress, and their hopes and dreams.” Her heart for others pioneered her legacy, both as a fashion icon and as a beloved humanitarian.

The tragic death of the Princess 23 years ago did not hinder the influence of her fashion legacy; if anything, it further developed her clout. Diana’s style sustained vigor because of its relatability to everyday people. She checked every box of normal life, from formal, to athletic,  innocent country, business, to her most precious role as a mother. Diana perfectly illustrated the many roles women have in life, therefore making her relatable in both persona and style.

While her dazzling formal looks are most popularly famed, her casual “out-and-about” looks have most recently been revered due to the rise of athleisure. Dubbed one of Diana’s most notable looks, her mid-thigh biker shorts and north Atlantic oversized sweatshirt are a casual look staple. Earlier this year, Hailey Bieber gave us major Diana comparisons with her seemingly identical look.

A prevalent trend in 2020 and in Diana’s time, the utility suit is a classic trend that the Princess was most assuredly a fan of.

Classy and bold, the princess never shied away from a bold print, even amongst a more subdued crowd.

In a more sophisticated look, dressed both down and up, Diana often used a blazer to complete any outfit.

In what could be the best revenge outfit of all time, Diana exuded confidence and femininity in this little black bombshell that would still make hearts melt today.

The late Princess is known for various looks, but the one she wore best was motherhood. Her vibrant personality is most evident in scenes with her boys.

Diana’s bold color palette and love for patterns were the perfect accent to her personality. The confidence she disposed of was her best accessory and has transcended her influence years after her death. Her commitment to branch out of traditional royal formalities in spirit and style has fostered her legacy that we know today.
