Bring the Screen to the Streets
Bring the Screen to the Streets

Costume design is one of the most meticulous aspects of the fashion industry, with each character needing an identifiable wardrobe. The efforts of these designers is rewarded by the adoption of character looks into the personal styles of their biggest fans. Style inspiration can be found anywhere, and what better place to start than your favorite TV shows?
Eddie Munson from Stranger Things
A new fan favorite, Eddie Munson won over audiences in the fourth season of “Stranger Things” with his bold personality, wild head of hair, and retro sense of style. The character’s fashion is said to have taken nods from metal bands of the 1980s, from Judas Priest to Kiss. To emulate Eddie’s metal style, think darker tones, lots of leather, and metal accessories to add dimension. Band t-shirts are a must, and a chunky shoe is a great way to finish off the look. If you want to take it even further, get a screen-accurate “Hellfire Club” shirt here.
Shioban “Shiv” Roy from Succession
The entire cast of modern classic “Succession” have excellent style, with costume mastermind Michelle Matland behind all of the luxurious looks, but Shiv Roy is one step above the rest. The character is sure of herself, and her tailored suits demonstrate her confidence in both her work and personal life. Cornerstones of this wardrobe include neutral tones, extremely well-tailored power suits, and a turtleneck in every color. Paired with delicate gold jewelry and a nude heel, implementing Shiv’s style will have you ready to take on the world.
David Rose from Schitt’s Creek
While one of the more simply dressed characters in “Schitt’s Creek”, David Rose is a style icon through and through. Seen in almost exclusively black and white, it is by design that David appears to be dressed in plain clothes that could have cost a fortune. He is known for his ability to style a monochromatic look, along with the occasional sarcastic sweater. Finding dupes of his costumes is fairly easy online, with many of his iconic graphic sweaters on Etsy and the occasional faux-luxury sweater found second-hand.
Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds
The loveable doctor of Gen Z’s favorite crime show, Spencer Reid is known for his quick wit and his sweater vests. The character is nearly always sporting a scarf or sweater vest, and many fans of the show have taken note. While the doctor’s style changes from season to season, a large collection of sweater vests and slacks are a must when modeling his wardrobe. Converse and mismatched socks are the prefered footwear of superfans of the show, but a pair of Dr. Martens or loafers work just as well.
Miriam “Midge” Maisel from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Midge Maisel is one of the most exquisitely dressed characters on modern television. The show takes place in the height of sixties fashion, and is living proof of the longevity of a solid silhouette and a pop of color. Never seen without a matching bag and hat, Midge’s character is certainly an interesting person to base your wardrobe around. To update her brilliant 1960s flair, look for trench coats, A-line dresses or tailored two pieces, and kitten heels.
While the world of television offers many unexpected fashion icons, we hope that these five can provide some style inspiration. Whether that be an entire wardrobe update or just an idea for a new outfit, there is no shortage of ways to incorporate the costume design of your favorite characters into your personal style.
