Chanel Cruise 2024

Chanel Cruise 2024

On May 10th, French fashion house Chanel took to the Paramount lot in Los Angeles, California to debut their Cruise line. According to their website, Creative Director Virgine Viard took inspiration from several facets that the city is known for, including outdoor sports like surfing and the general wellness culture. Amidst the iconic Paramount water tower, colossal LED screen showing lines of blank and white palm trees, and Chanel logo in the middle of the makeshift stage, it is clear that the collection was a true love letter to the city.

The nearly 70-piece collection tells a very interesting story of the colorful history of Los Angeles. Viard opened the show with an all black halter crop top and tweed shorts, accessorized in gold. The model also wore black warmups and a gold Chanel backpack. The line continues like this for several looks, seeming to take inspiration from the more mature, fashion forward parts of the city. In the transition between themes, many models come down the runway in gold swimsuits and sequined dresses.

About halfway through the show, bright and lively pieces begin to appear in several ways, including swimsuit pieces and signature tweed coverups. The colors range from chrome purples to neon pinks, and darkens into California sunsets. Many of the garments also have neon-colored iconography like palm trees or roller skates.

Several pieces stand out within the collection, including those which use the fashion house’s iconic tweed. Viard also mixes Los Angeles street style with Chanel iconography in a classic No. 5 gradient crop top with shorts and a skateboard.

The collection as a whole is an exploration of the city of Los Angeles and how its history can evoke a sense of escape and vacation. From the sleek uses of black swimsuits to the structured neon pink pantsuits, Viard wrote a love letter to the city through Chanel.
