The Characters of American Fashion

When looking for fashion inspiration, cinema is often an immediate thought. This is due to the integral role clothing and costumes play in the creation of film from conception to production. Directors utilize the wardrobe of characters to set them apart from others, making each individual recognizably themselves. The character archetypes used across American films are defined by their fashions, creating unique aesthetics for audience members to recreate in their own lives. 

Cowboy

The cowboy is a key component of any western film. Typically seen in denim, cowboy boots, and a cowboy hat, this character’s entrance onto the silver screen is never missed. This style has found its place on the streets as a number of western-style media have renewed the classic aesthetic’s popularity.  

Mobster

Mob movies have become one of the most prolific genres from American directors. The genre, spearheaded by Martin Scorses, holds a focus on the Italian organized crime families in the United States. Mobsters are often seen wearing nice Italian suits or nylon tracksuits with gold jewelry. This is still seen as a popular style due to the ongoing legacy of movies such as The Godfather series, Goodfellas, and the consistent praise of legendary series The Sopranos.

Golden Boy

Athletes play a major role in stereotypical American movies, whether the primary focus is sports or simply follows traditional high school life. These “Golden Boys” are often shown in jerseys and letterman jackets, as well as preppy, “old-money” clothes like cable knit sweaters and trousers. This aesthetic has become extremely popular in the real world due to the timelessness of the look.

Girl-Next-Door

The girl next door is another typical American character. Often the most “popular” females in the movie, these characters usually fit into conventional beauty standards They typically follow trends effortlessly and nonchalantly find their way into the spotlight. As this style is always changing with the constant influx and death of trends, it is hard to pinpoint this style in real life; however, you know them when you see them.

Rebel

Rebellious characters are quintessential to American film. These rebels are often seen in all black accompanied by striking makeup and hair. These characters typically wear unique silhouettes with numerous accessories and edgy designs. These characters are often extremely cynical and humorous characters that lack the popularity of others. The style of these characters can be seen throughout real world style within the use of leather, motorcycle boots, and a number of other pieces and shapes.

No matter the movie, character, or genre, American style inspiration is often drawn from the big screen. Whether this comes from the characters or the people that play them is always changing; but, looking to celebrities for style inspiration remains unchanged.
