Controversial Color Combinations That Surprisingly Work
By Sophie Amen — October 2nd, 2025
Time and time again, we have fallen victim to the presumption that neutral-toned outfits are the key to looking put-together and fashionable. While throwing together an all-black outfit or a simple white tee and jeans may be easy and efficient, creating looks with unique color combinations can be easier—and more stylish—than you think.
On and off the runway, weaving certain colors together that may have been perceived as “incompatible” has unexpectedly worked quite well, proving that outfits do not have to be basic or monochromatic to look good.
Black & Navy Blue
For an elegant and clean look, pairing navy blue and black is the way to go. Together, they create a classic and chic effect that is both timeless and modern. While some may say there is not enough distinction between the two colors, with the right amount of contrast, they can exceed expectations.
Red & Pink
On the brighter side, red and pink can create a visually appealing contrast with the boldness of both colors. Because the two hues sit next to each other on the color wheel, they are often considered difficult to combine. In reality, similar shades are relatively easy to combine by using the right tones and, in some instances, color blocking.
Yellow & Pink
A unique color combination that has gained popularity in recent years is yellow and pink. Whether through delicate pastels or muted tones like pale yellow and dusty rose, this combination makes for a fresh, vibrant mixture.
Black & Brown
Sorry to break it to you, but the fashion rule that “black and brown don’t mix” is a myth. The colors can actually create a quite sophisticated look when paired together. While they are both considered neutral colors, their similar tones can make constructing an outfit tricky. However, with some intentional styling, they can look harmonious.
Yellow & Maroon
While these two colors may be considered too high-contrast and unflattering to look appealing, the combination can be a classic pairing for the fall season. The two hues are more neutral, making them relatively easy to style since they are not overwhelmingly vibrant. Even so, they do not have to be the two central colors of the look. Through accessories and items such as bags and shoes, yellow and maroon can be pulled off effortlessly.
Experimenting with unexpected color pairings can be just as easy as working with neutral colors. Bold mixtures of shades once dismissed as “clashing” have proven surprisingly successful, presenting the idea that there is more than one way to achieve a chic ensemble.
