Fall Edit

Fall Edit

By: Rachel Long

Every year, I feel like fall creeps up on me. One second it’s a ripe 90 degrees, and the next, I need to have an array of sweaters on hand. With everything going on this year, I think there is a collective feeling of everyone wanting the seasons to change. One step closer to normalcy. One step closer to Christmas. One step closer to a new year.

When I asked the Square staff what they loved for fall fashion, many chose pieces that felt like throwbacks. Big collars, sweater vests, leather trenches, chunky platforms, etc. I think there is something to note in this; although fashion repeats itself, a lot of the current trends are being pulled from the decades in which our parents grew up. 70’s curtain bangs are back, 80’s hair curlers are back, and the 90’s vest look that our dads embraced is back.

To an extent, we as the Gen-Z generation, dealing with a pandemic and a politically rocky year, are trying to embrace the “good ole days” that we didn’t experience but that our parents reflect on frequently.

We might be posing the question of whether we will look back on this time as “the good ole days.” Whether we do or don’t, we will be able to look back on this time when we embraced our parent's fashion. Dove into their closets for that one magical piece. Came out a clone of who they were in their youth.

Whether or not this is us trying too hard or holding onto a little bit of goodness, the fashion during this season has been impeccable and deserves to be celebrated.

So let’s dive into this throwback fall edit.

Reconstructed Chunky Chelsea Boots

If you have ever been on TikTok - even if it was for one mindless afternoon, you definitely saw a trendy fashion girl wearing some chunky Chelsea boots. Chelsea boots are a staple fall footwear find, but the reconstructed style that is resurfacing this fall is so fun. Pairing these with frilly pink dress, will complete that high low look of girly and grunge.

Leather Everything

Leather to me has always seemed unapproachable. It was for the cool girls who always looked effortless. It was a power look for mergers and bad-a women. But, leather this season has become something that everyone can wear. From trenches, to paper-bag shorts, to pencil skirts. Leather is about to become denim’s new competition.

Knit

Sweaters and knitted tops are a classic fall staple. For layering with a tissue turtleneck, or throwing on top of a t-shirt, or have a stand-out moment with voluminous sleeves; you can never go wrong with a sweater. Our parents sure knew the value of a good sweater; because I have found so many great classic turtlenecks and cable knit sweaters in my moms closet. But if you want something a little new and fun, check out these styles from ShopBop.

Power Sleeves and a Poppin Collar

Bold sleeves are back and here to stay. This is definitely an ode to our mother’s bold suits and shoulder pads. A power sleeve will boost your confidence almost immediately. With a killer pair of jeans, you can make this a going out look or something for the office.

Statement Coats

Long gone are the days of neutral puffers, trenches, and jackets. Say hello to the bold, printed, texturized coat this fall season. The world is too gray to dress in only neutrals, amp up your outfit with these smile inducing styles. Throw on a bold plaid trench with a mini skirt, tights, and some chunky boots and you are good to go.
