Jo March’s Modern-Day Wardrobe

Jo March’s Modern-Day Wardrobe

By: Hailey Layne

“I don’t like to doze by the fire. I like adventures, and I’m going to find some.” - Jo March

From the mind of Louisa May Alcott came the cherished piece of classic literature known as Little Women. As we celebrate the permanent existence of the star-studded film remake of the novel Little Women, we want to celebrate the gutsy, unique, and admirable Jo March. Fiercely independent and refusing to settle, Jo March became the main character who inspired people across all age groups. She balanced a personality that contained ample drama as well as courage, loyalty, and imagination. Aided by the 2019 movie adaptation directed by Greta Gerwig, I adapted a modern-day wardrobe for Jo March living in the 2020s.

We can’t forget that Jo would refuse to be boxed in by my limited characterization of her.

1. Jeans That She Could Move In

Stiff denim and being physically uncomfortable would be a bother to March. She would require jeans that fit well, but would not constrict her movement for an impromptu adventure.

2. A Somewhat Dramatic Coat

Every writer has to have a signature item, I feel that March would agree that a coat is a piece that reflects one’s personality as well as being a piece of practicality. Scratchy material would be intolerable to her, and of course, warmth would be a high priority to bear the inevitably low temperatures during a New York winter.

3. White button-up

This is fairly self-explanatory. The white button is a classic piece in anyone’s closet and it can be used interchangeably for almost any event. Meeting with editors would require a staple white button-down.

4. Worn-in sneakers (for city stomping or running through fields)

Jo would never bother with a pair of heels, so she would need a reliable pair of sneakers that would stand up to the wear and tear of her life in the city as well as out in the country. I feel like she would be a New Balance fan not only from the comfort aspect, but the 574 is one of the most durable shoes out there. The Adidas Stan Smith would also fulfill her sneaker needs as well.

5. Mini gold hoops

Jo would think diamonds or pearls were pretentious. She would much rather have something simple and meaningful. I could see her sisters all purchasing the same pair of earrings so that they could match as the March sisters.

6. An Oversized Claw Clip

This trendy hair clip would be the final touch to all of Jo’s outfits. Not only is it THE hair accessory of the moment, but it’s extremely handy when you need to pull your hair back into a last-minute updo.
