Colors, Prints, and Patterns to Expect Spring 2021

Colors, Prints, and Patterns to Expect Spring 2021

By: Isabelle McLeod

Lovely ladies and gents of the universe, we are in the thick of winter. Winter means walking outside to biting cold, grey skies, and dead trees. Winter means I am dreaming of spring. Blue skies with big puffy clouds, flowers blooming, and enough sunshine to make you want to kiss your neighbor! Or maybe just give them a big wave.

Speaking of spring, let’s talk about the colors, prints, and patterns we are about to see for the 2021 spring season. Fashion has gone through many phases since 2020 has come and gone, leaving lasting effects for 2021 styles. People have grown monotonous in their routines, and their outfits, reaching for the nearest sweatsuit to bring them comfort. But with a new year comes new possibilities, and fashion has almost become a concept of healing for people. People are wanting to break from the boring routines and countless restrictions now more than ever, and spring colors bring the perfect opportunity to get up, get dressed, and have your outfit reflect your optimism.

Colors

After Spring/Summer 2021 fashion shows were released, it was clear that designers were not lost on the dreams of brighter days ahead. As far as colors go, we are still seeing the bright and happy shades that resurface every year, but the palettes won’t be quite as neon as we saw in 2020. Pantone comments on their forecast of Spring colors, saying they “combine a level of comfort and relaxation with sparks of energy to encourage and uplift our moods.” The core classics collection on their color trend report will likely be a staple in every minimalist’s wardrobe, with shades of black, grey, and neutrals. My personal favorite is Buttercream, the color for all of your warm-weather Stick of Butter™ outfit possibilities.

Continuing to the more colorful shades, with spring color trends being heavy on the warm tones and light on the cool tones. This season offers a beautiful twist on the classic hues of spring we all know and love such as pink, purple, yellow, green, blue, and orange. A couple of colors to be on the lookout for in this group are pastel yellow, millennial lavender, green ash, magenta, and marigold. Colors guaranteed to bring out the maximalist in you are bubblegum pink, tangerine orange, and mint green.

Prints & Patterns

The prints and patterns of the spring include florals, different variations of stripes, nautical themes, and the fan-favorite tie-dye. Floral patterns usually resurface each spring, providing an opportunity to not only just admire the flowers, but wear them too! These prints are taking a more vintage direction, so you’ll likely be able to find your new favorite dress at a thrift store or perhaps in your grandmother’s closet. Stripes for the spring, whether horizontal or vertical, are my love language. Stripes are classic and fun, a perfect print if you’re not looking for anything crazy. As far as nautical themes go, I’m a little hesitant about this trend outside of a cruise vacation, but maybe a skirt with some fish on it could be just what everyone is missing from their closet. And finally, tie-dye! Whether you’re making tees for yourself at home or purchasing a designer’s take on it, tie-dye is being seen everywhere from denim to sweatsuits to maxi dresses!
