La Vacanza: Versace’s Pre-Fall Collaboration with Dua Lipa

La Vacanza: Versace’s Pre-Fall Collaboration with Dua Lipa

By: Emma Greene

Versace’s much anticipated La Vacanza collection, a collaboration with Grammy Award-winning artist Dua Lipa debuted on Tuesday, May 23 in Cannes, France.

La Vacanza serves as the first collaboration of its kind at Versace. The label has previously collaborated with fellow Italian house, Fendi, but Dua Lipa is the first individual to co-design a collection alongside the house’s creative director.

Donatella Versace has expressed her appreciation for the musician’s active role in the process, as she sketched and conceptualized several of the designs herself. Dua Lipa was a natural choice for such a project, as she has donned Versace pieces on countless red carpets and maintained a close relationship with the house since their first encounter in 2018.

While pieces in the collection carry a resemblance of the pop sensation’s personal wardrobe, inspiration was largely drawn from the late Giovanni “Gianni” Versace’s Spring/Summer 1995 collection, featuring similar cuts, fluorescent colors, and butterfly elements.

Stiletto cowgirl boots embroidered with butterflies were among the most notable pieces in the collection and were presented in black, white, and pink colorways.

Metallics, loud patterns, and sequins defined the show, but a few all-black looks were also included. Each piece in the collection is fit for a Barbie girl, continuing the Barbie-core trend inspired by Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film, Barbie.

Dua Lipa portrays Mermaid Barbie in the film which is to be released directly to streaming services on May 26. The artist wrote a new single titled “Dance the Night” which will be featured in the film.

Designs within the collection also included several Barbie-esque male ensembles.

It is unlikely this is the last time Donatella Versace and Dua Lipa will partner as Versace has described them as the “perfect duo.”

The Dua Lipa x Versace collection is a unique facet of the current season as it makes headlines in the fashion, pop music, and film industries. Not only does the collaboration mark a significant milestone for Versace as its first collaboration with an individual designer, but it may also serve as a gateway to future fashion endeavors for Dua Lipa.
