Director’s Pick: The Best Looks from the 2021 Met Gala

By: Molly Roberts

After two highly-anticipated years, the Met Gala is finally back! After Covid-19 and quarantine, many were ecstatic to hear of the Met Gala’s return. This year’s theme was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” Celebrities and designers had differing opinions and ideas of what this theme meant. From paying homage to old Hollywood celebrities to wearing the flowers of every state, the Met Gala hosted a wide variety of looks. The Square Magazine directors picked their favorite looks of the night and highlighted what these looks meant to them.

Elena Ossoski, Editor-In-Chief

“Sienna Miller in Gucci is one of my many favorites from the night. The dress and the excessive texture channel the elegance and glamour that defines the age of classic Hollywood in America.”

“Karlie Kloss in Carolina Herrera by Wes Gordon perfectly embodies the spirit and pure freedom of being an American.”

Lucy Cavett, Editor-In-Chief

“Kendall Jenner’s look was my favorite because she looked so angelic. She always turns heads but never overdoes it which I think is the perfect combo!”

“One of my favorite looks of the night was Yara Shahidi in Dior. I love how Shahidi paid homage to civil rights activist Josephine Baker. The embroidered gown paired with a veil in gloves was absolutely stunning.”

“Another top favorite of mine was Normani in Valentino. She looked jaw-dropping in a yellow ball gown with large puffed sleeves. She complimented the dress with yellow eyeshadow that made the pop of color even more present in the look. She cited her vision as black girl excellence and that she wore yellow because it pops on dark skin.”

Kylie Cockrell, Social Media Director

“I absolutely love how classy Kate Hudson’s look is - I think she can do no wrong. She looks so confident and I love that she showed off her new engagement ring too! The two-piece look is sexy but sophisticated and I think it encompasses her personality perfectly.”

Kate Abraham, Business Director

“My favorite is by far Kendall Jenner.” Kendall Jenner is picked above in a bejeweled “naked” dress created by Givenchy’s Matthew Williams.

Dawson Wilson, Director of Photography

“I’m picking Winnie Harlow for my favorite look of the night. First of all, I think Iris Van Herpen is one of the most revolutionary designers of our time, and seeing Winnie wearing her design makes my heart flutter. The other big thing I love is how the sheerness of the dress showcases Winnie’s vitiligo. It sort of turns Winnie’s body into a part of the fashion statement.”

“I think my favorite look was Kate Hudson’s outfit! Not only do I love the color choice, but I adore the way she took a casual two-piece and turned it into a stunning outfit for the Met!”

Isabelle McLeod, Creative Planner

“I like Lorde’s look because it was regal with a modern twist! Her makeup was simple. The headdress was extra without being too distracting. I love the matching purse, all of the embroidered beads on crisp silk, and the plain flats. All in all, chef’s kiss!”

“I think I have to go with Zoe Kravitz wearing the Saint Laurent mesh gown. I was just amazed by how good she looked. This was such a statement piece and one I couldn’t take my eyes off of. The jewels and crystals gave me old Hollywood in America vibes but then with all of the exposed skin I feel it tied back to present time as well! Just absolutely stunning, I can’t stop looking at it.”

Eleanor Hoover, Copy Editor

“My favorite was Anok Yai wearing an Oscar de la Renta dress with Giuseppe Zanotti heels and Ana Khouri jewelry. I absolutely love the contrasting textures and materials in this look. The shape of the neckline and ombre of the details on the dress bring focus to her face and create a perfect place for the jewelry to sit and not be overshadowed.”

“My favorite look was Kaia Gerber! I love this Oscar de la Renta Met Gala look because it is timeless, classic, and chic. The ivy detailing at the bodice makes this look stand out from every other black gown, and that’s why I chose it as one of my favorites!”
