New York Fashion Week Recap: Welcome (Back) To New York

New York Fashion Week Recap: Welcome (Back) To New York

By: Tyler Leik

New York is back, and so is fashion month. After 18 long months of canceled, virtual, and socially distanced shows, the past weeks in New York City have been that much more memorable. The trend forecast for the coming spring of 2022 is nothing short of exhilarating, with pieces leaving us speechless through their striking simplicity to out-of-the-park statements. This year, it only fitted that New York Fashion Week was closed by fashion’s biggest night: the long-awaited Met Gala.

In addition to the Met Gala, the street style present throughout the week also left quite the impression when it comes to forecasting what is sure to be this season’s most popular pieces.

Fashion Month always kickstarts trends but also provides a route for old ones to resurface. This week left audiences itching to play dress-up with lots of shiny fabrics and sequins, two-piece sets, bold patterns, wispy details, knits, and as expected, the return of Y2K styles.

Peter Do previously made a name for himself in the fashion world through only social media and lookbooks. This past week, Do made his runway debut on the Brooklyn Waterline under the umbrella of Manhattan’s skyline. His debut did nothing but make the return to normalcy and Fashion Week even more exciting. Do’s work encompasses every characteristic of what ‘neutral’ is, be it through his sleek knife pleats, exquisite tailoring, or reflective textures. To end the already incredible show, instead of walking out alone, Do closed the show by walking out in step with his staff, as an ode to their tireless work on the collection.

Peter Do was not the only designer to leave jaws on the floor following his show. Seasoned designers like Jeremy Scott left their audience with quite the impression, despite the rain. Moschino’s Spring/Summer 2022 was opened by none other than the new mother, Gigi Hadid, in Bryant Park. Scott made quite the statement by helping his audience relive the playfulness of childhood fantasies through refrigerator letters, cartoon animals, and the fun shapes and colors often associated with the innocence of childhood.

Following Thom Browne’s return to New York, NYFW was closed by Tom Ford with lots of sleek sheens, statement pieces, and even some Y2K glitter bomber jackets.

The upcoming trends showcased in fashion week are not strictly limited to fashion. New beauty trends almost always emerge from the midst of the crazy. This week in the Big Apple, designers showcased their looks alongside bold hairstyles, statement accessories, graphic liners, bold eyes, and earthy tones.

Milan Fashion Week is just around the corner which is sure to bring more European designers out from the depths of the pandemic, with new trends, and fun street styles to pile on top of what has already been seen in New York over the past week.
