Naomi Osaka Changes the Game for US Open Fashion

In stark contrast to the classic white dress code on the grass courts of Wimbledon, the US Open continues to uphold its history as a stage for players to make creative and unique fashion statements.
With this Grand Slam sharing a timeline and city with New York Fashion Week, players like Naomi Osaka, Taylor Townsend and others showed up at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center not just to compete on the court, but to serve streetwear-inspired designer looks.
The most notable and talked-about looks of the week were undoubtedly worn by Osaka. The two-time US Open singles winner has a history of making a statement with her on-court style, and this Slam was no exception. Dressed this year by celebrity stylist Law Roach, who has notably worked with Zendaya and Ariana Grande, Osaka took her on-court appearances to the next level with extravagant looks for each of her matches.
In her first match on August 31, Osaka made her entrance in a Who Decides War look consisting of a floor-length French terry hoodie, complete with sewn-in newspaper clippings of her career highlights and a white tulle skirt. The outfit drew inspiration from classic New York City streetwear and basketball-inspired styles, and her cornrows and headband were a nod to NBA legend Allen Iverson.
For her second match, Osaka wore a custom white Thom Browne coat featuring embroidered tennis racquets on the back over a custom Nike tennis dress. This showstopping pairing was still streetwear-inspired but with a more classic flair, blending typical tennis whites with edgier silhouettes.
In Osaka’s third match of the tournament, she got back to business in a monochromatic gray outfit consisting of Nike fleece mixed with elements of a Monse suit with flowing, wide-leg trousers. This style was a standout, appearing markedly different from the rest with its more tailored, businesswear-inspired vibe.
On her final day at the tournament on September 7, Osaka went out with a train of abstract color in a KidSuper coat from its Fall 2026 collection. The coat was inspired by the NBA, again working in the basketball themes from her previous looks.
Osaka may not have won another title at this year’s US Open, but she earned the right to be named best dressed on the court. She continues to up the ante each year as she takes creative risks, and though she received criticism from both the fashion and tennis communities, she’s sticking by her choices.
In a recent post on her official Threads account, she shared, “You know… idgaf if you don’t like me. I don’t mind being the first to do something and getting trashed for it.”
While the thought and creativity behind Naomi Osaka’s looks at this US Open were controversial for some, it is hard to deny her influence on fashion in sports. As a past winner of the tournament in 2018 and 2020, she will undoubtedly be remembered both for her excellence in the game of tennis and her unforgettable style on the court.
