What They're Wearing at New York Fashion Week

By Emma Greene — February 20, 2025

A glimpse into one of February's biggest weeks and the trends its attendees are embracing.

Earlier this month, I had the honor of attending New York Fashion Week as a PR intern. These past few seasons, I’ve learned that while staples have a place in every fashion person’s wardrobe, each season is defined by its own idiosyncratic styling codes. As a slightly seasoned fashion week participant who, for the first time this season could stand to pay attention to more than self-consciousness during the festivities, these are the emerging trends I noticed among attendees throughout the frigid but fun week.

Furs, furs and more furs

Vintage fur is having a major moment this winter — exacerbated, I’m sure, by New York’s frequent snowfall. While opinions on the recent fur resurgence are mixed, it’s no surprise that many of fashion’s biggest names have embraced the controversially cozy garments and their faux counterparts. Perhaps the slight controversy has heightened interest, or maybe the “Mob Wife” trend had more of a lasting impact on the zeitgeist than its social media origins led me to anticipate. Michael Kors and Altuzarra were among many brands to incorporate fuzzy accents into their runways, signaling a positive future for the once-shunned texture.

Animal prints

Another lasting aspect of the “Mob Wife” trend — animal print — was everywhere this season. Editors and influencers alike wore elevated versions of the trend, gravitating toward patterned outerwear and under-layers in equal measure. Cheetah print was the most popular choice, with zebra closely trailing behind.

Professional wear

Button-downs and blazers are a staple of any corporate or capsule wardrobe. However, the “office siren” of SoHo has grown up, now incorporating ties and buttoning her shirt to the top. The trend continued into outerwear with a surge in trench, overcoat and peacoat styles. (Bye-bye puffer jackets, at least for now.) So-called corporate core continued onto the runways of Thom Browne, Shaone and Calvin Klein, to name a few, signaling that professional dress will continue to rise in the coming months.

Pops of color

Fashion’s recent affinity for primary colors — especially reds — manifested in the form of accessories. From shoe soles to ties, tights, bags and scarves, the most stylish among us craved eye-catching additions for their largely neutral ensembles.

Practical footwear

Comfortable footwear is a must as showgoers navigate between neighborhoods and burrows from sunrise to sunset. Accounting for train delays, traffic and exuberantly priced ride shares, walking is an unglamorous but necessary means of travel between venues. Despite frigid temperatures, ice and snow that quickly turned to slush on the sidewalks, practical shoes can mean the difference between seeing a show and wishing you had — more than my inner shoe lover would like to admit.
