Best Dressed at the 2023 Met Gala

Stars at last night’s Met Gala, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” found personal and unconventional ways to honor Lagerfeld and his historic designs. There were sub-themes seen on the red carpet as many guests chose to revive and reinterpret Lagerfeld’s past collections, his personal style, and even honor his cat, Choupette. Pearls, gemstones, wedding gowns, and new takes on suiting dominated the evening, with an almost unanimous adherence to a black, white, and blush color scheme. Let’s take a look at some of the best looks from the biggest night in fashion.

Honoring the Classics

Anne Hathaway wore a tweed Versace gown with gold and pearl accents in homage to Lagerfeld’s iconic designs while at Chanel.

Nicole Kidman’s blush Chanel couture gown was designed for her by Karl Lagerfeld for her famous Chanel No.5 commercial in 2004. She repurposed it for this year’s event to showcase Lagerfeld’s timeless designs.

Michelle Yeoh was the epitome of class in a Karl Lagerfeld gown that elegantly mixes masculine and feminine silhouettes.

Supermodel and entrepreneur Gigi Hadid dazzled in a black, sheer outfit by Givenchy.

Daisy Edgar-Jones wore a black two-piece set by Gucci that played with Lagerfeld’s signature bows.

Co-chair of this year’s Met Gala, Dua Lipa opted for a classic tweed corset dress from the Chanel archives with a full skirt and a show-stopping 100-carat diamond necklace.

New Takes on the Chanel Bride

Longtime friend of Lagerfeld and the house of Chanel, Penelope Cruz wore a bejeweled, hooded gown that was inspired by a design from Chanel’s Haute Couture Spring/Summer 1998 collection.

Unsurprisingly, the late arrival of A$AP Rocky and Rihanna was the highlight of this year’s Met Gala. A$AP Rocky wore a full Gucci outfit while Rihanna was all drama in a luxurious white, floral Valentino hood that was shed as she ascended the steps to reveal a gorgeous, fitted gown underneath, perfectly accentuating her baby bump.

Florence Pugh debuted a shaved head while walking the carpet in her billowing, white Valentino gown and feathered headpiece.

Alton Mason showed a fresh take on the bridal look with his lace bodysuit, veil, and fabric bouquet designed by Karl Lagerfeld’s current Creative Director Hun Kim.

Dripping in Pearls and Gemstones

Michaela Coel, another co-chair this year, hit the red carpet in a Schiaparelli gown that was designed after Coel’s request to be “dripping in gold,” which was certainly achieved in the gorgeous ensemble.

Kim Kardashian also wore an elaborate Schiaparelli outfit, but opted for pearls over gold with a long, white cape flowing behind her.

One of the few stars to stray from the minimalist color scheme, Salma Hayek wore a bright red Gucci gown with a ruffled skirt and pearl straps that sat just off of her shoulders.

Keke Palmer channeled Diana Ross in a custom sequined Sergio Hudson gown and light blue shawl.

Doja Cat took the theme in a different direction than most guests, choosing to emulate Karl Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, Choupette, in prosthetic cat makeup and a fully beaded Oscar de la Renta hooded gown topped with cat ears.

Suiting Reimagined

Many stars chose to recreate Lagerfeld’s personal uniform through their outfits and Conan Gray did just that in his jewel-covered Balmain outfit with a matching fan, Lagerfeld’s favorite accessory.

Kristen Stewart is no stranger to wearing a suit on the red carpet and she impressed once again in this Chanel ensemble including a cropped dress shirt and suit jacket over a sheer blouse paired with loafers and oversized trousers.

Emma Chamberlain wore a Miu Miu robin‘s egg blue, cropped jacket with a matching belted skirt that showed a bejeweled midsection underneath. The internet star changed at the top of the red carpet into a black version of her red carpet look without the silver undershirt to carry out her hosting duties.

Cardi B’s take on suiting was dramatic and fabulous. Designed by Chenpeng Studio, the ballroom gown was adorned with black fabric flowers and a white collared top and black tie underneath.

Jenna Ortega was dressed by Thom Browne in a black corset dress with a ruffled skirt and cropped, tweed bolero jacket for her Met Gala debut. The look included a white collared top and tie with sheer, knee-high socks and platform shoes.

The Met Gala is the biggest fashion event of the year, and this year’s A-list guests did not disappoint. Karl Lagerfeld had a lasting impact on the fashion industry and last night’s event highlighted just how deep his influence will continue to run in the years to come.
