Ralph Lauren has never needed to chase what is new. Somehow, everyone else usually ends up chasing him.
For Spring 2027, Ralph Lauren opened New York Fashion Week with a collection that felt romantic without losing the pieces that make the brand so recognizable. There was tailoring, leather and sportswear, but there was also color, shine, brocade, sheer fabric and pieces that looked like they belonged somewhere between the city and a summer trip you wish you were on.
The collection was built around contrast. A corset was paired with simple chinos. A colorful brocade jacket was worn with white cargo pants. Structured pieces were followed by long, fluid dresses, embroidered velvet and metallic fabrics that caught the light as models walked. Nothing stayed in one category for very long.
That is what made the show feel so Ralph Lauren.
The brand has always been able to make opposites work together. Something rugged can sit next to something romantic. A tailored jacket can be styled with a softer piece. An outfit can feel polished without looking too perfect.
This season, the brighter looks made that especially clear.
Gold, rich color and patterned fabrics broke up the classic whites, navy and neutrals people usually associate with the brand. Some of the pieces looked worn in or slightly aged instead of brand new, which kept the collection from feeling too formal. Even the more glamorous looks still felt relaxed.
Then came the dresses. Flowing, draped and colorful, they felt romantic without being too sweet. The dresses were proof that Ralph Lauren romance is not always flowers and lace. Sometimes it is a little dramatic, a little undone and much more interesting.
There was something very romantic about the whole show, but not in the obvious way. It was less about perfect dresses and more about how different pieces were styled together.
Ralph Lauren himself described the collection through ideas of romance and individuality, and that came through in almost every look. Instead of giving one exact version of the Ralph Lauren woman, the collection gave us several.
She can wear a corset one day and trousers the next. She can dress in white and navy, then show up in color and gold. She can be polished, relaxed, feminine or slightly undone.
Maybe that is why Ralph Lauren continues to feel current without constantly changing who he is.
At a time when fashion seems determined to put everyone into an aesthetic, Ralph Lauren keeps making the case for personal style instead.
And after Spring 2027, maybe the most Ralph Lauren thing you can wear is whatever you would not normally think to put together.
