Coachella kicked off festival season in early April, with celebrities and influencers sparking some of the year’s biggest fashion trends. Festival-goers are embracing maximalist style through dramatic layering, vibrant colors, fun patterns and statement accessories. This year has brought a mix of aesthetics including western boho, Y2K pop and the return of 2010s Tumblr and indie sleaze.
The western boho aesthetic has been a festival staple for decades. Vanessa Hudgens has been known as the unofficial “queen” of Coachella for her 2010s style choices that people still use as inspiration today.
What exactly makes up the western boho look? Outfits start with pieces that emphasize soft movement, such as maxi skirts, flowy dresses or lace blouses. To lean more into the western inspiration, distressed denim is a no-brainer, and cowboy boots are the perfect shoes for comfort and style.
Accessories and layering play a huge part in achieving this look- pieces like fringe jackets, layered belts and jewelry, big sunglasses and straw hats complete the look.
Pop girls are back—and they are bringing the 2000’s with them.
The Y2K pop aesthetic has been a dominant trend this festival season. The crowds of Zara Larsson, Tate McRae and Addison Rae are contributing to the colorful and playful atmospheres being created this summer.
Zara Larsson and Addison Rae fans are prioritizing color in their outfits, incorporating sequins, body glitter and shimmery makeup into their looks.
Tate McRae has been compared to Britney Spears for her choreography and persona. Her crowds lean more into a 2000’s streetwear style, wearing oversized jerseys and micro shorts paired with knee high boots and statement sunglasses.
Times were simpler in the 2010s, and festival-goers miss it. The Indie sleaze and 2016 Tumblr girl aesthetics have made a return together, with music playing an important part in both.
The modern approach to indie sleaze consists of graphic tees, leather jackets, fishnets, distressed denim, studded details and a pair of worn-in Converse or Dr. Martens to complete the look.
The 2016 Tumblr girl is unmistakable and nostalgic, but she is being reimagined for a new generation.
Crochet tops and distressed denim shorts are popular pieces for this fresh take on the Tumblr-era; but the accessories bring everything together. Flower crowns, studs, chokers, statement necklaces and fringe are all elements that add to this familiar style.
