It is not a surprise to see Rihanna on the cover of Vogue, but the mogul’s appearance on the Vogue Plus China release for April 2024 debuts a new appearance that we have not seen in her previous work. Rihanna stands as an icon whose aesthetic continues to inspire those in the industry. 

In collaboration with visionary photographer Hailun Ma and stylist Alvin Yu, the creative direction behind the cover sparks conversation. Rihanna recently launched her makeup brand Fenty Beauty in mainland China and the cover is a commemoration of the release of her raved products. 

Rihanna graces the cover wearing a custom look designed by none other than Pharrell Williams, creative director at Louis Vuitton Menswear. Williams’ recent collections have captivated the fashion world, and this collaboration with Rihanna is a fusion of creative brilliance. Rihanna’s front cover attire features a floral embellished cowboy hat with a jacket layered over a floral bra, hinting at her original brand, Savage x Fenty.

This feature is more than a grasping fashion statement; it is a cultivation of individuality and diversity in beauty. Rihanna’s goal in collaborating with the Vogue Plus China editorial team is not only about showcasing the mogul’s style that many are already familiar with, it is a journey through unique cultural and creative expressions. During a conversation with Vogue China Editor-in-Chief Margaret Zhang, Rihanna explains what color means to her in her creative processes, saying, “To me, color represents an infinite ocean of opportunities and possibilities.”
